Roof Spoiler/High Level Rear Light

Hi,
I am a New member and fairly new to 993 ownership - August 2005. The technical enquiries and replies have made useful reading and helpful guidance. Thanks. Like most of you I cannot resist adding here and there to improve safety and peace of mind. Conscious that the standard stop/rear lights are very low set and probably unseen by any speeding urban maniacs, not to mention the stormers on the autobahns, I wish to fit a high level spoiler/rear light on the assumption it should be more visible. Has anyone done the same. If yes, was it a diy job or professional? I am reasonably handy with tools but looking at the rear screen I wonder how it is attached and where the cables go to. I welcome any help.

On another matter - Becker radios - I have recently changed the original Sony Jukebox. What a ghastly choice the factory/importer made. Hardly compatible with Porsche design philosophy to my mind. Still beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and it was the nineties after all said and done. The point is not to rail against flashing electronic toys or those who prefer them but to say how very clear the screen is on the Becker Mexico. It is very easily read. The sound quality is excellent to my fading ears and much more agreeable than my Tinitus, and it has got rid of the spots before my eyes into the bargain. Needless to say when I am in sport mode I only have ears for the engine.

It is fitted to the rear screen with two double sided sticky pads and as Maurice said the wiring should be sitting there ready to connect to the wiring in the light. Two wires if I remember correctly when I took it off my last car.

Also if anybody is interested and wants to make me an offer, I have the brake light sitting in my garage and if your car is turquiose blue, all the better!

As Maurice has said, the brake light/spoiler is available from a number of sources - but there are a few copies out there which are nothing like the original Porsche part. The real thing uses two metal brackets which are epoxied on to the rear screen. The main body of the spoiler is then bolted to the brackets via two sprung lugs. The (painted) cover is then dropped on top with a number of spring clips. I know Design 911 and Bert Gear both sell the original Porsche part but do check when you buy. My car was fitted with an aftermarket copy which was, to be honest, complete rubbish. It fell off after a few weeks and I resorted to getting the real thing which is a work of art by comparison.

The real secret in fitting it is to ensure that you leave the epoxied brackets sufficient time to cure (like a few days) before attempting to fit the spoiler. I'm sure it also goes without saying that the position of the brackets is critical - you only have 1 or 2 mm at most either way.

I'm sure Maurice is right in saying that the wiring should be in place under the headlining although you may have to drill a hole under the top lip of the rear window to get the wire out to the spoiler. My 964 didn't have any wiring there so we had to run a new wire from the brake light up the C pillar into the roof. If you have a sunroof, access is a little easier through the zip (I assume the 993 has a zip a la 964).

If you have a rear wiper I believe the 993 wiper arm already accomodates the spoiler - the 964 arm is too long and has to be changed for the 993 part.

Hi Folks,
Many thanks to you all for excellent advice. My mind is much clearer now as to what to do. OEM part for sure.
I will check out the radio speakers. My ears are not very discriminating these days. I stood too close to a Williams/BMW F1 turbo engine, some years ago now, when it was revved hard after a practise lap. Stupidly I thought I did not need ear defenders! There is one born every minute.
