Roof won't open

Hi anyone - please help. I have just had my roof replaced on my 1997 986 2.5 with an upgraded glass one and now the darn thing won't open. The garage where I had the roof fitted were baffled as they don't specialise in Porsche but they have done a great job. They say the switch is faulty as it got stuck a couple of times with them. I didn't have any problems before although the roof open warning light used to come on so I just opened and closed the roof and it went out. They say it is quite pricey for a new switch although I have seen one on Porsche 911 website for £18. When you unclip the latch, both windows drop as they should but the switch on the dash does nothing. Please help! John

A good first check if everything is dead is fuses and the relay it sounds like the switch in the roof is OK as the widows open. If there was electricity getting to the motor I suspect you would se some movement and/or hear the motor trying to turn. Check the motor to see if they knocked out the connector or left it off. The same with the microswitches in the hood, not sure where they are on your model.

Unplug the motor and see if you have electricity getting to it. The motor could be at fault or jammed if this is the case. The switches come out of the dashboard quite simply, maybe somebody knows the contact that work on which pins so you could test the switch for continuity.

Finally, is the handbrake light still working as a faulty switch here would also stop the roof.

Have checked fuse and ok. When I click the switch there is no sound from any motor just the switch "click". Have read similar probs on this forum and will check handbrake/motor connections tomorrow in the light. Have also noticed that some people say the microswitch in the roof could be stuck/faulty. Let's see in the morning. Thanx. John

Have just been on several other Porsche Forums and have taken note of many people's similar problems to mine and turns out that could be just a faulty switch in the roof mechanism. I took it apart yesterday evening and disconnected the wiring then plugged it back in - the roof opened ok. So put everything back together and reattached the unit to the roof and it wouldn't work again. Took it apart and reassembled and it worked. Did this several times so must be faulty switch and not the relay/fuses or the roof wouldn't open at all. I have just purchased a replacement switch from PorscheShop for £20 + vat + delivery so let's hope this is it!! Seems from other forums that this is a common problem - or is it just pre-2000 Boxsters? John

Got a replacement roof centre switch from PorscheShop (986.613.795.02) for only £20 and works a treat. Just have to remember that because this is a glass window upgrade for the 986 plastic hood, the folding procedure means you have to close the roof mechanism clip when the hood begins to fold or the hook will get caught behind the cloth aperture behind the rollover bars when you re-close the hood (which I found to my dismay). This is due to the glass window taking up more room than the folding PVC one. So all I need now is some sunshine over Easter (let's hope the Breakfast meet at Malton will bring out the blue skies!!) Hope this thread helps anyone else. John

I'm glad you've got it working ok.

That's odd about the glass window though - any idea which one it is? I've got a BAS one and don't have any problem.

Hi Mark. I believe it's also a BAS (bought off ebay)
Instead of the window section folding and going flat on top of the engine bay, the new glass window section looks to fold diagonally so pushes the front of the roof section about an inch further forward, thus the hook on the latch catches under the accessories section behind the rollover bars so you have to ensure the latch is fully clipped closed before it drops down.

I've had the BAS glass rear window roof fitted for 18 months. I've never closed the latch and the roof opens and closes perfectly every time.

Now that I have the new glass window, does anyone know the part number for the wiring harness
10-07-BOX-030-8.jpg
and where can I get one from please? Thanks, John

Now I'm confused...

All the Boxsters have the wiring harness for the heated rear window as standard. In case you go out and buy a hard-top.

The BAS roof comes with a harness and connector fitted, just plug it in on the passenger side (on the RHD car).

Hi Mark. As I said, I bought the new hood off ebay and either it came without a wiring harness or it was thrown away with the packaging. Anyway, I don't have one and wondered where I can purchase one or I could possibly make one. I presume the wiring plugs into the socket behind the passenger seat as below.

Ah - right. Fair enough - I missed that you bought it off ebay.

Well the obvious place is BAS themselves. They probably sell spares.
I'm not sure if a post 2003 986, or a 987 loom would work - but that might be worth looking in to as well. Your nearest Porsche centre parts dept would be happy to help.
