Route inspiration

Evening,

Here's one for you to ponder? If you had a long weekend (4 days) and you were planning a mini road-trip to France starting from Surrey taking in some nice sights, seeing some scenery, enjoying some good roads, where would your route take you?

Louise and I are going away with some friends once the snow disappears and it warms up a little and both are trying to work out a decent route. As they don't drive a sports-car, it'll be probably more gentle driving and more stops [:)]

Question is, I'm looking at Google maps trying to get inspiration and failing miserably! Does anybody have any other ideas of nice drives or suggestions? I was thinking Bordeaux and going down the coast potentially but can't make my mind up!

Any inspiration would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Simon

I reckon Bordeaux is a bit ambitious for a long weekend if you don't want to spend all of it driving! Over 600 miles each way by my measurement. How about something similar to Gary's autumn trip around the Ardennes? Very scenic there whereas the west side of France isn't particularly. Or you could do Normandy?
I would rather go to Yorkshire or Wales for a long weekend![;)]

I'd agree with Alan, the route to the Ardenne had some wonderful driving roads, typically French and the hotel in Sedan was really quite special.
From there Champagne region is only a short hop and has plenty of things to see and do.
An added bonus is that the motorway is easy reach should the weather change or time runs away with you.

Normandy is another great place to visit with super roads along the coast- just bang Honfleur into the sat-nav and then follow the coast road.- mind you it'll be cold on the coast this time of year!! Stop off at Montreuil on the way down- if only because Les Miserable is all the rage [:)]

Alan/Gary, thanks for the ideas. Agree Bordeaux is too far having looked at the mileage again. The Ardenne is a great idea, hadn't thought of that and as you say, not far from the champagne region. Alan - do you still have the route for the drive at all?

Cheers

I did a long weekend in France last July from Surrey base with my wife-i needed to balance some good driving (the aim!) with some good restaraunts and hotel to get the balance right (if you know what i mean)[:D]-and get a tick for another trip this year!
we went from Portsmouth to Caen via the fast ferry (i did not want to spend all day on the slow ferry and don't enjoy overnight crossings also it saved several hundered miles driving as compared to taking Eurotunnel /calais and hence allowed us to expolre further West)and were in France by mid morning, kept off the Peage roads and dropped down to Flers (spelling?) and across to St Malo where we stayed Friday and Saturday night.-this was an excellent base and somewhere we had been trying to get back to for some years.
Had a fantastic circular drive west from St Malo on Saturday- probably not as spectacular as the alps but empty-ish roads and good surfaces.
on Sunday i had booked the return fast cat from Cherborg late evening to Portsmouth so we had a full day and different route form the way out and drove north from St malo up the coast which i really enjoyed -some really empty flowing roads.
I can let you have some stop off or a hotel recommendation if this part of france is of interest is of any interest, for me it worked better on this occassion that a ba##s out blast further South or East due to the time restriction[:)]
we got some nice treatment on the way back as perhaps the ferry "loader" was a secret petrolhead/PCGB member_ he lined the Porsches that seemed to randomly arrive for that ferry up in one bay with some Jag E types and then let us load way ahead of anyone else[:D]_which i'm sure pleased everybody else[]
