Rs Boffin needed

Qustion for you RS boffins

I guess this has probably been covered before but is it right that Cup race cars ran with 18" Split rims like wot is on my car?

Correct Lee! Speedline.

There were a number of reasons for this:

a) The DTM (German Touring Cars) of the time were using 18" Pirelli rubber, so tyres more readily available; a question of economics I guess;

b) In theory, if part of the wheel was dinged it could be replaced without replacing the whole of the wheel as in the original 17" Cup wheels -try that now though!!

c) Lap times came down with 18" rubber;

d) The cars handling was more neutral on 18"; less prone to oversteer;

d) There were more variables on suspension and roll bar settings with 18" rubber. On 17", the roll bars were set full hard at the front and full soft at the rear (like mine) and there was no more room for adjustment in order to counteract the oversteer;

Just to clarify the situation and add a bit more information to Mel's excellent post.

The first season of cup cars actually ran on the Cup 1 style 17" wheels, though they were 1/2" wider than those found on the 964 RS.

The 18" 3 piece Speedlines were introduced for the following season.

I knew I could count on your minds of fantastically useful information.

But hold on just one moment... Why do I get sooooo much stick over having Speedlines on my little baby?

I not sure if you guys realise just how much grief I've had to endure over the last few years regarding this subject particularly from a some "Swede-Basher" that goes by the name of Des Sturdee. What do you guys think, could it be jelousy getting the better of him?[;)]

Answers on a postcard please (keep it clean)

He wanted them Matey, seriously Lee, you may have a problem putting 17" straight on with the Big Red calipers....I would ask a specialist....so keep your 18" on with slicks and come out and play or forever be a Garage Queen.....[:D]

I shall enlighten you again grasshopper, Harness's were always an option, that's why Porsche put fixing points in the chassis all be it three point ones at the time, Cage, again this was a factory option....I suppose the factory thought that some buyers may actually do Track/Race Days neither of these factory expected additions interfere with the dynamics of the car, particulalry suspension, ABS braking and general set up, have you got your secretary to book Brands yet?[;)]
 
LEE, just spoke to HQ...........5 spaces left asked them to hold one for you...suggest you call them and send them a cheque asap.......not rocket science![:(]
