RS clutch and flywheel upgrade

I had to put this off last year when the engine rebuild went over my budget. However, the delay has now come to an end and I got the kit fitted today. It was well worth the wait! I am simply gobsmacked by what this upgrade has done to the car. [:)]

The throttle response is like lightning compared to before. Acceleration is verging on the viscious and the revs barely drop as I snap from one gear up to the next. And that lovely audible but subtle chatter from the drive chain when pootling round at low speed. [8D] Definitely the second best upgrade I've had put on the car (KWV3 is still the best upgrade).

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]Was was done for me on the previous owner by Ollie at RPM and even when comparing with Greg's single mass version the response is brilliant - not just on the throttle and the immediate spin up, but throttle off too. It all just happens exactly in time with the pedal (or so it feels).

A box full of Swepco to boot and I'm happy - just wish I had the countryside nearby instead of jammed SW London.

Ditto! Surrey bares most the brunt of my right foot (unless I'm in Sheffield in which case its the Snake Pass)

Thats great news Steve! I looked at Clutch/Fly wheel upgrade last year but have a long list of jobs before I get round to that. The targa has also had a new clutch recently so its a shame not to make use of it.

Where did you source the parts and how much did you pay for the install?
 
Last Sept I picked up a spare RS flywheel at a Porsche autojumble for £15.. Passed it on already.. just need the rest!

I didnt even know there was such a thing!

My good friend google tells me the lat one was in May, So I'll be keeping my easr to the ground on for this years. Cheers [:D]

Thanks Chris. Supplied, fitted and VAT included it all came to just over £1600. I'm more than happy with that because as you can see from the link below, the parts on their own can be £1100 + VAT:

Any stalling problems ? This can be a real PITA. Sometimes it's an issue and sometimes it's not. I was relatively lucky with mine - it wasn't a big problem. Nevertheless there is a tweak that can be made somewhere in the system that means the idle fuelling kicks in at a slighly higher rpm, so it "catches" the falling revs. In standard spec the revs often fall too quickly for the fuelling to kick in, so the car stalls. I found it almost always happened on downshifts when pulling up to roundabouts, which is less than ideal. You learn to drive round it, eventually, by not putting the clutch in until you are almost at a standstill, but it was helped hugely by the mod to the fuelling which JZM did for me. It's not as simple as just increasing the idle rpm which is just a bit of a bodge and doesn't really solve the problem.

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]This is interesting Jamie. I do get this symptom (rarely) after long journey's or long use. The idling I thought was a fixed limit and imagine the increase here is at the ECU(?). Any more details on this feuling mod? Cheap/easy?

Jamie, you are of course absolutely right about all that. Indeed, having read of the issues on Rennlist, I was all prepared for the stalling issue and then having to get the DME mapped to compensate.

As you say, it's not a simple idle issue. On the test drive and on my drive home, it was perfect. No issues and always caught the revs just in time to prevent stalling. [:)] Unit 11 (Danny) says that sometimes they see stalling problems, sometimes not. He thinks fresh, clean inside engines like mine tend to be OK but also says that doing an idle adaption with the Bosch Hammer with lots of electrics on at the time; lights, rear demister, etc can solve the problem (he didn't need to do this on mine). Other times nothing will solve it so a re-map is the best way to sort it out - preferably a live remap or one of the off the shelf Steve Wong chips.
 
I'm afraid I don't know exactly what the mod is or how it is performed ie software or hardware tweak ..... It was done by JZM for me when the car was in for something else. It did not take any time or significant cost, so I can't imagine it is anything very technical or involved. It was explained to me, simply, as a modification to the rpm level at which the fuelling re-starts on over-run. JZM knew exactly what to do when I mentioned the stalling issue with LWF, but to be honest I'd never seen this solution on any of the forums when the problem has been discussed a million times before. Anyway, it did work for me - not a 100% cure but it made things appreciably better.
