RS engine mounts installed

I decided it was time to finally do this upgrade and am chuffed to bits with the result. The car feels so much firmer at the rear and gear changes are slicker than before...even though my normal hydraulic engine mounts are only 2 years old and still in very good condition. [:)]

Here's the kit - I bought the lot from Porsche as with PCGB discount they came up with the best price:

You just need to put a floor jack under the crankcase and jack it up to take the strain. Then just change one mount at a time.
 
All in they came to ÂŁ290. It's about a half hour job but you need someone to hold a socket on the bolt head while you torque up the lower nuts. First you want to soak the bottom nuts with penetrating oil for a few hours because breaking those loose is the most difficult part.

I wouldn't do it without having the engine carrier strengthened first because the solid mounts put more stress on it - I had a gusset plate welded on mine a while ago.
 
I know it must be hard to quantify but how is the difference in noise and vibration from the mount change?

What prompted the change considering your engine mounts were OK?

I could make it into 20 questions but 3 is enough to go on with :)

I don't think I could attempt to quantify the change in absolute terms. The best I can do is to say there is a slight increase in NVH but it's not intrusive. I think the increase would be less perceptable for cars with normal comfort or sport seats that have more padding than my Recaro PPs. I would say my NVH went up more when the LWF and clutch were fitted.

Changing them is mostly down to me wanting to make the car better and better for track work. The RS mounts should make it a bit sharper on turn in and more stable in high speed spends. We'll have to swap passenger rides at Donington so that you can compare the difference. [:)]
 
Not 911 experience, but swapping my previous rally car engine mounts for harder material in 2 and solid in the 3rd made a huge difference to the feel of the car thru bumpy corners. Before it felt like the front had lots of momentum of it own and was taking you where it wanted to go. Afterwardsit felt like the steering wheel had full control of the front. One of the best mods I did - especially for the relatively small cost.

When I took my 911 on track for the first time at the end of last year I had a similar feeling about the back as I used to about the old rally car pre-mount change.

Steve - that brace you have in there - does it replace an existing brace? I have just looked at mine and it has a similar piece. It's hard to tell from a photo though if your is sturdier....

Ade, it's a plate that is welded onto the original carrier. The pics on the Rennline site show how it fits to the carrier:

I know of other folks that have strengthened theirs simply by welding some steel plate on the 'arms' of the carrier. I went for the Rennline version because it's a nice, neat piece of kit and wasn't overly expensive - $75 + shipping from the States. It's really a belt and braces thing...the original carrier is up to the job with normal hydraulic mounts but has been known to crack under the stress of track work with less forgiving solid or worn out mounts.

I got one welded to mine because it developed a crack and that was with hydraulic mounts ans zero track days.
