RS Flywheel Upgrade

Hi all,

It's now time for the clutch to be done as my German isn;t that great i cannot determine from the vast amount of service history that came with the car, if the DMF has been replaced or not. Seeing as the engine is coming out I wondered if replcing the DMF with a the RS version would be a beneficial upgrade. Would appreciate some viewpoints. Cheers
 
Funny you should mention htis, as it's on my list for winter, RS flywheel and clutch from 9M....

I've been tempted with this also but was put off by tales of the car stalling very easily as a result of the lightened flywheel.
As I drive my car on the road a fair bit I thought perhaps this wasn't the best idea.
If yours is a weekend toy or trackday hack then this obvioulsy wouldn't be a concern.
Then again, I'm sure you would get used to it on the road as the RS boys seem to cope ok.
 
I was told at my last service that I have a heavy clutch and that it would need replacing so I've been looking out for costs of clutches and found a place on e-bay from the states half the price that I've been quoted here. It is a standard clutch and not RS but the cost saving means that you could buy the RS flywheel.

If you go to an rs spec then your engine will stall. The rs flywheel works with the RS because the motronics unit is programmed differently, in part its kicks-off the idle valve stabiliser earlier. The only 100% solution I know of is to fit a Motec brain.

I remember seeing an article about this in PP. Indeed it took a fair bit of mapping to resolve the stalling issue. I believe it was Ninemeister that sorted out the mapping for the owner.
 
The stalling issue doesn't seem to affect everyone though. I've got an RS fw/clutch in my C2, and after GT1 had tweaked/reset the DME I have had no problems whatsoever. However, I don't use the a/c (doesn't work anyway).
 
If you've got a single mass/RS flywheel then you'll be able to hear some gearbox clatter when the car is idling. Push in the clutch and this will stop. It'll also rev a lot quicker (like a race car...) without the DMF.

I've had an RS clutch/flywheel in my '91 C2 for 3 years now and no problems at all with stalling etc.

Did you notice a big difference when you changed the flywheel?

I am familiar with the C2 standard set up, and the rs standard setup, but not the C2 with lightweight f/w setup. I too was of the understanding the C2 Motronic was inadequate to control the Idle.

Do you have a Cat? Chip?
I have no Air con.

you are lucky then! The DME and idle valve have minimal adjustment - load the electics on the dme reset to get another 50 rpm (maybe) and reposition the idle valve. If you really have no problems then you beat many rs owners who have the revised motronics to cure just that. well done.
 
I probably am lucky with having no stalling issues. My set up is no cat, no primary muffler. Stock chip, airc con, although I never really use it.
