Rubbing?

I think this has been asked in the past but here goes.

I've got a problem with the front wheels rubbing in the inside arch when on fullish lock.

I'm running 17" et55 wheels with 205 tyres.

I think i've read that by adding 5mm spacers will eliminate this, is this correct?

Rob,

You're right. There are two possible solutions.

There are some different steering stops available which limit the steering angle to prevent the rubbing or you can, as you suggest, fit 5mm spacers to move the wheels out sufficiently to prevent contact on full lock.

You're effectively changing the offset of the wheels aren't you? Does this have any adverse effect on anything?

Yes, you're right again!!

The standard 964 offset (with the D90s) is 52.3mm so your ET55 wheels are a smidgin' over anyway - so the 5mm spacers will reduce the effective offset to 50mm making the centreline of the wheel 2.3mm further out than standard. Given that the 17" wheels are wider than the D90s (I presume 7J) the extra inch will be spread evenly either side of the centreline, hence 12.7mm each side. The clearance between the suspension strut (as a point of reference) and the inner wheel rim should work out as 12.7-2.3=10.4mm less than there would have been originally. It's actually the tyre which contacts the chassis rather than the wheel so THAT depends on the tyre size/aspect.

The net result of all this boring stuff is that with the spacer you should be OK. You are unlikely to notice any difference in handling with such a small change in track width. You can play with the numbers here

Steering stops changed from 6 to 10mm, I would bet on you having 6mm stops.

There is also the problem of some tyres haveing the rim protectors that extend a bit far, these can also catch the inner wing.

Haven't got the foggiest, can find 7mm and upwards but no 5mm.

Might have to order 10mm and cut in half[:D]
 
I TRIED A PAIR OF 7MM SPACERS AT THE WEEKEND BUT NOTICED THAT WHEN I TIGHTEND UP WITH STEEL RACE NUTS WITH OPEN ENDS THERE WAS ONLY ABOUT 5MM OF THREADS HOLDING THE WHEEL ON THE STUD, WHICH YOU CANT SEE WHEN USING ORIGINAL NUTS, SO I THINK I WILL TRY SOME 3MM ONES INSTEAD

Do you know where these can be purchased and how much they'll cost?
And how difficult it is to change them?
