Rumble at 2000rpm?

Hi,

1997 Boxster 2.5L (UK version).

I get a rumble from the engine (well, the back of the car) whenever I go through 2000rpm. Either going up the revs, or down - almost like there is a resonance somewhere.

Anyone know what might be causing this?

I've had it on the OBD2 ECU reader and no DTC's.

Cheers,

Jules

Hi Iain,

Yes I had a nosey in the engine bay when I first got the car (about this time last month) and I can confirm the engine cover and carpet cover are all back nice and secure.

Cheers,

Jules

Hi Jules

I had this problem about a year ago.

Turned out to be a heatshield on the exhuast that had come loose.

My local independent fixed it for not much money :)

Hmmm - was that not more of a "zing" sound rather than a "rumble"? [;)] I would imagine a heat shield would zing since its thin and tinny? This feels more like the engine is out of balance, or maybe mis-firing at that RPM? However, I'm told that a mis-fire would trigger a check-engine-light - which I dont get.[&:]

It feels like the whole car is gently shivering?? Its not noisey.

I originally thought it was ripples in the tarmac, till I noticed it only did it at that rpm.

I was kind of hoping that people would chime in saying "oh yes the familier Boxster rumble" - but since no-one is, that confirms its not a normal thing.....

I'll do some more investigations.

Cheers,

Jules

At my 48k service JZM advised wear of the front engine mount which could lead to more vibration. They claim this is not an uncommon fault. I can't say I've noticed any change, but could that be your problem?

Hi,

I parked up tonight after the drive home from work, put it in neutral and revved it back and forth through 2000rpms - and its definitely there.

It could be an engine mount - I'll need to check. If its turned to jelly, it wont damp the vibrations any more - I've seen this in the past on other cars...

Cheers,

Jules
