I'd be up for this (and this coming from someone who still hasn't got round to taking the RS on a race track!). Did 'Run What You Brung' in the old air-cooled beetle days at Santa Pos and Avon Park Raceway many years ago - it's great fun and as you say unless you're in a top-fuel dragster or jet-car it's very safe. And if you're sensible it needn't be too harsh on the clutch either. Add me to the list Des!

Run What You Brung 9th August Santa Pod

Well I suppose here as a good a place as any to get a very small ball rolling in what could be one of the Best Fun Filled Days out with like minded peers, with a bit of bravado, banter, chat, food, strong coffee and burning rubber.... oh and as cheap as chips.
Today was one hell of a revealation ... a VW Event at North Weald, side displays, a few stalls, burger and Thai food bars, bouncy kids play area, show and shine and for sale area. Simple ...... and kids free, adults £10........ but the whole day was dominated by a 1/4 Mile Drags Strip, Run what you Brung! For a small fee only you could drag your, Van, Vette, Superbike, 911, Scooby, Golf, Lotus, Caterham, Atom, Bentley, Aston, Lambo, Fezza you name it ... all marshalled above board and legal, with timed runs giving MPH at Gate.
Hmmm, I thought, you don't need track day experience, just a steady nerve watching those lights and flooring the pedal to the metal (which is rare on track) dropping in that Clutch or however you Tiptronic jokeys manage (may be an adavantage I think) ... hang on in a straight line and see if those factory claimed 1/4 mile figures are true ... but more importantly out running the Guy/Girl in the next lane!
I know there is a lot of hot kit in these well read pages and the vast vast vast majority never done this before, but would like to give it a blast. Obviously categorise the cars into groups ..... looking at 2010 and same venue as it really seemed to work.
Just gauging interest .... again I have never done one of these runs (other than a V-Max totally different) and Brett once tried a Santa Pod meet which unfortunately never happend ... this IS A VERY INFORMAL format .... could the same recipe work with us? I would encourage all Porsche Drivers to attend and maybe as a bit of whizz invite a guest car club ... did I hear Ferrari ?.. or a prominately Porsche Day with all other Marques welcome or as just a closed Club Event if we have the interest.
Your interest and comments would be appreciated below.
I would say it seemed very well run with a Fire Engine and Ambulance behind the burnout area and well marshalled. I would think NO insurance company would cover it, but I would think you have more chance coming to grief at the bottom of your road. Clutch, Tyres and Nerves prbably the only useables I can think off. All the runs were officially timed .....
I recall organising Judgement Day 2 which was a great success, over subscribed but would not want another slalom open event for various reasons. This would be a clean straight duel, toe to toe, doing what your Porsche does best and a whole lot of FUN!

Yes the thought did cross my mind, would certainly get the officials to extra sweep the strip. Your RSR would be awesome at such an event ..... and NO noise limits!
Sounds fun Des. I've ran the carrera at 1/4 miles on an airfield event in the past. 14.03 @ 90.5mph. My 930 did 13.1 @ 108mph at Santa pod.
Keep em' rolling .........
Chris, at least once in your life you gotta rev it to about 6000 and then just side step you foot off the clutch......ohboyohboyohboy......from the driver of the car with the second longest 11 on test hill at Brooklands.....[][][]ORIGINAL: ChrisW I think I'd be prepared to give a little time away in exchange for very modest clutch wear and intact half shafts []
When did they let you drive the test hill at brooklands? Thats a scary little peice of road! Hey Melv, just been reading you article in total 911, tell me where the photos taken of the car at goodwood? Was looking at the interior shots, thinking it was either goodwood or brooklands, settled on Goodwood - am I right?
On Topic please![:-] Melvs' Car where has it not been photographed![]
Yep! The second run I did up test hill I was warned by one of the organisers not to do an 11 as it's a Scheduled Monument and they would have to clean off the tyre rubber......ORIGINAL: h_____ Goodwood - am I right?
