Sounds like it could be (in rough order of expense) -

Air Flow Meter
Idle Stabiliser Valve
ECU

Who did the service, were they a Porsche Specialist, did they know about the problem beforehand ad try to cure it?

it seem to start after fitting a super chip fitted, not sure if caused problem, removed chip, with original problem still there, local garage ,not porsche related, did sevice, dont think its the chip but you never no, emailed chip providers, they said they have had no problems before, pain driving at minnit,is it just amatter of elimanation, nick

I'd agree with Paul except I'd put ISV top of the list. Whip it out and clean it with carb cleaner.

to be honest not sure were to look, to remove and clean, any pictures would help greatly. searched the net, but more confused than when i started, tks nick

Hi Nick,

A chip will not be the cause of your problem, however - the disturbed items as a result of its fitment could be. This would only include the ECU, hence you may want to eliminate that first and check the multi way connector has been firmly refitted and that the ECU was secured back in the frame (passenger footwell on RHD car).

The ISV is controlled by the Motronic ECU and is operated in accordance with signals received by the ECU (such as the cold start sender and AFM signal).

Your problem could be the ISV, but as your idle is fluctuating, it suggests the ISV is operating (although it may be sticking internally). A test meter is required to test the ECU and ensure the ISV is getting the correct signal. The ISV is hard to get to (as it is under the manifold).

So, my first suggestion would be to check the AFM connector first. Remove, wipe dry and spray with contact cleaner. Refit and try. Best to start with the easy to check things first.

Regards,
Andrew

I have just a similar problem. The idle was up and down, sometimes even racing up to 1500 - 1600 rpm. It then wouldnt start when hot. Local indie plugged it in and it was the Air Flow Meter. £17 for a new one, all fixed.

As Andrew has said the ISV is under the inlet manifold. No harm in doing as he suggests first, but when I had exactly the same symptoms cleaning the ISV resolved them.

It's a bit tricky to get to, but it can be done without removing anything else. It's a while since I had an S2, never mind cleaned the ISV, but from memory it's held on with 2 hex-head screws and it's visible between 2 of the intake runners; either 1&2 or 2&3. Once you get it out you need to make sure the cylinder inside is free to turn by cleaning off the varnish that will have built up using carb cleaner.
