Running in new engine

Never had a new engine before!!

Obviously no track days for a bit but not sure what running in means as I was informed that the engine had done 40 hours on the bench.

The design has changed for the half shaft bearing so hopefully the problem has been solved. It needs to be as the new motor should be in the UK in December.

40 hours! Is this different from normal production where from memeory it is under 30 minutes

Normal "wisdom" is to run in for max 1000 miles, varying the revs and dont exceed 2/3 max revs for first 600 miles. Important not to load the engine up at low revs.

have you any detailed info on the change of bearing housing? When was this change introduced as we have already had several fruitless versions?

Thanks Nic

40 hours was what I was told at Chiswick. They run the car under load on a bench. Whether its true or not is a different matter!!

I saw the old bearing and the new one. They even showed me a new 996 engine. I don't know when the new vesion came in but lets keep our toes crossed as I have ordered the new model which comes out at the Paris motor show.

IMHO running in on a bench means nothing. There's no g-forces, load (weight of the car), the engine isn't being bumped about. True running in only starts when the car is complete and driven out on the road.

True.

ALL the engines are bench tested at the factory (to maximum revs for quite a while!), but it still says to run the car in for x-number of miles in the manual when you get he car.

Yes, that's why I said x-number - it seems to vary year by year (as I recall my handbook says 1000KM or 1000Miles [&:]...think about it[;)])

Hi Mark

Tom, this info is in the FAQ's in the Boxster and General sections:

If it says "Non Member" by your name, you need to confirm your Membership Number and Forum Name to Sophia at Club HQ (email forum@porscheclubgb.com ) This should be a one-time fix, and will also allow you access to the member-only areas of the Forum.

In regards to the running in, I am mid way through running in my new engine in my 911 3.2 Carrera.

It is really frustrating, but I have been told not to exceed 3,500 revs for 1,000 miles. I have nearly done 500 miles now and it is about to go back to have the valve clearances and other bits checked.

Can't wait to get the 1,000 miles done. Better to be safe and not sorry!!!

Hope you enjoy your car when you've done the 1,000 miles.

Regards

Phil
