Running-in oil

Hi Folks,

Now I'm starting to build the bottom end of my engine I'm just about to purchase some mineral oil to do the initial running-in and bedding the rings.

From what I've read a good low-detergent mineral oil is what is called for.

Interestingly I've found a specific "running-in oil" from Millers which is about as cheap as it gets, £25 for 5L. There are also similar oils from Westway and Morris Lubricants, but slightly more expensive.

Valvoline do a standard 20W50 mineral oil (ZR1?) also but concerned about additives (plus it's more expensive than the Millers).

I was just concerned if I buy a "standard" multigrade mineral oil that it may have additives including detergents which might not be good whilst running-in.

On that subject is there any problem running a mono-grade oil instead of multigrade for running-in?

Either way I'm looking about £40 for 7L of Millers

Thanks

David

I pondered this myself, I spoke with AMAC and although they said a running in oil would be fine, they also said any basic non-synthetic mineral oil would be fine.

I ended up using a cheap as chips 20/50 mineral oil and it was fine. You are only going to do about 500 miles with it to bed in the rings, putting a bit of load on then coasting back down, rinse repeat...........
