running lumpy

Hi, my 98 boxster is running lumpy. it started with the engine management light came on, my indy plugged in the diognostic, and it said it was the coil packs. I had 4 changed and had a 6000 mile service at the same time. this did not cure it so booked it in again, no faults came up on the diognostic, they said the other 2 coil packs needed replacing as they were cracked. I also had all the plugs changed. All was fine untill the next day when it started running lumpy again, its only on tick over. so i was told to book it in again as they cant understand why it is running like this. can anyone tell me what it could be as i am running out of confidence with my indy.

No such thing as a 6000 mile service...
Might be the MAF sensor? There are also sensors in the exhaust that can trigger the check engine.
I would expect all these to show up on the diagnostic though.

Define "running lumpy" at tickover.

Are the revs constant?

Is there a misfire?

Coil packs & plugs good start but they should have changed them all at the same time but at least they are now done.

As Mark suggests the engine check light can be triggered by MAF faults and the exhaust oxygen sensors (there's 4 of them) but they bring up attendant fault codes.

Does your indie have decent fault code reader, cheaper "universal" ones don't read all the Porsche fault codes, they show up as Zeroes?

other things to look at are the HT leads, the variocam wiring and air getting sucked by passing the air filter (manifold gaskets), but again problems here will show up fault codes.

You say it only happens at tickover I presume the performance and revs attained are "normal"? if they are and the engine is developing the power it had before and unless its using more fuel than normal why worry.

If you need advice on good indies in your area get your RO to give you a list of good indies in your area.
