running slightly lumpy - fuel problem/valve spring?

My car has started to run just off beat. Starts fine from cold but when you first accelerate feels as though no power, once it starts to warm up it is just missing a beat.Difficult to explain not totally misfiring but not full power.Idle ok hot or cold ,plugs seem ok , all same slightly brown colour no deposits on electrodes. Just been for run to see if it just needed a good thrashing but no joy, pulled happily to 100+ no smoke but not as smoothly or quickly as it should.
Am I right in thinking a fuel supply issue and how is it best to go about diagnosing the problem.
Fuel filter was replaced this year, the engine is 180k mls old and has never had any major work done except headgasket 3yrs ago.injectors are the origional and never been reconditioned,FPR origional and no petrol at vacuum connection, checked vacuum system and seems fine good vacuum at resevoir.
Or could it be a broken/sticking valve spring, a bit of tapping noise at top of engine.
Any thoughts welcome

Thanks

The injectors are quite noisy leading to a tapping noise top end, have you given the ignition system a good look over ?

no not yet but will do, will check for spark , replace plugs check dizzy cap etc.I would have thought that the idle would not be good or starting would be a problem if it was ignition related but will check to eliminate or not.

As Tref said the other day, 944s can run incredibly well on ignition parts that look like scrap, until they fail. Leads, dis caps and rotor arms are often original. [&o]

coil, leads, dizzy cap all replaced in last 3 years ,plugs approx 6mths old but will check/swap with known good ones.Used car today and not as bad and the tapping noise not present just injectors ticking at idle.
Strange one but will sort through over next couple of weeks.

Thanks

Nick
