Rust Bubbles At Base Of Windscreen

roygarth

On the passenger side (RHD car) just at base of windscreen I've spotted a few rust bubbles.
IIRC this is a 964 weakspot?
Presume it's a screen out job to do correctly?
Any other top tips?
Can anyone recommend a good paintshop around Norwich?

This particularly annoying as PO had just had a windows out re-spray when I bought car a year ago!

Thanks
Piers

Piers,

I'm afraid it is a bit of an Achilles Heel for the 964 - and the 993 too come to think of it. The rear screen suffers the same problem. It seems that the rubber seal tends to allow water to settle in the corners and it just settles in to do it's worst. Unless it's cleaned out properly - and, perhaps, even replaced - there is every chance it will return as it sounds like it has in your case.

It's surprisng how many otherwise decent cars you will see with this same problem and it's unfortunate that by the time you notice it, it's far too late.

Can't help with any paintshop recommendations for your area I'm afraid. I'm sure there are plenty of knowledgeable individuals in your local region who can. A post in your Regional forum might get some input.

Regards

Dave

Hi Piers

Having just got my car back from the body shop this this week after a similar repair to the rear screen I would reccomend you attend to the issue sooner rather than later.
All that was visible on my car was two tiny areas begining to bubble up in the top corners, each no bigger than a few pin heads but I was present when the window came out and to say I was surprised is an understatement. There were three areas of corrosion the largest the size of my fist and I'm told the repairs we quite tricky. All this in a car I believe to be in good order and a pretty much rust free example.

Darren.

Exactly same prob on my Cup Car and it is a screen out job...don't hang around!! Upside is I got a new replacement screen and rubber thru insurance as it had a few stone chips in it!

Cunning plan.....I've got a few stonechips....should 'rubber' always be replaced? Is that covered by windscreen insurance?

Thats how mine was done, oops I need a new screen whilst my rust is being sorted, all done under the watchful eye of the painters...

Parents 993 also had this, super low miles and Garaged all its life, was done under long life warranty if i remember..

I need a windscreen due to large stonechip and yes there is tiny bubbles at the base. Can we get a specialist bodyshop to do both under insurance
or do we have to trust the likes of autoglass. Also to throw another spanner in the works a number of 964 owners on Rennlist have found the 993
windscreen a better fit & finish...

Just had this done. Fortuitously had a chip in the screen from late last summer so took car in to ScofM . They took screen out - did remedial work on frame and supervised Autoglass putting in screen courtesy of the insurance co.

Glass co were excellent and installation appears fine.

Front certainly is - don't know about rear - someone else will come along with answer I'm sure.

My insuranse co ( Haggerty) want me to use autoglass so i am looking for a good bodyshop in the North-East who
will do the preparation and supervise the fitment by autoglass. Any recommendations ?

Just had mine done too (clearly a common problem then!). Waited for windscreen to require attention and got the bodyshop (Premierebodyshops in Luton) to attend to it. Again, I'd advise getting it attended to sooner rather than later. The next question is where do you paint up to...? With mine there was minimal cost difference blending across the roof or spraying the entire roof so we did the latter (thats both front and rear windows out then). Fantastic job. If the rust is beow the tops of the side pillars I guess blending along these will be very acceptable, I was just not keen on 2 different paints blending on the roof - possibly the most noticeable panel. For interest, it cost little more to get the bonnet done too which had the inevitable stone chips. All done with a perfect colour match (red too).

Mike

When I brought my car 18 months ago, there was no rust at the base of the front screen, it is something I particularly looked out for and rejected several that were rusty in this area.

Now I found that the rust is bubbling through again so it need to be redone, both front & rear appear to have been done at some time.

No one seems to have indicated how much they paid for the work, please could you guys give an idea?

Also, does anyone know what Specialised Paintwork in Reading are like these days, they used to be well recommended but I have not been there for some time?

Cheers

I just had the screen replaced in mine too due to a large stone chip. The insurance company wanted to use the Autoglass bodge it boys but my independant servicers forewarned me that they had watched them at work and it wasnt for the feint hearted. They recommended that i get a Porsche specialist to fit a new screen and tell the insurance company thats what i wanted to do. Surprisingly, the insurance company got the alternative quote from me and agreed to it, apparently it was cheaper than Autoglass charge the insurers ! So to anyone else claiming a new screen on insurance, tell them you want it done by a specialist as its a classic Porsche. [:)]
