Rust on brakes

Not for lack of hard use I hasten to add haha!

Hello all - Quick question. Porsche dealer said the insides of my brakes were heavily corroded at last service but it flew through its MOT as pads and outsides of discs were fine. I think Im correct in saying that there are two discs on each wheel and the calipers only touch the outsides of each disc (?) so some rusting on the gap in the inside should not be a problem.... or is it!?

Cheers

I think you'll find he meant the inner face of the disk that you cannot see from the outside. I had a Boxster fail its MOT because of this - they have to be VERY bad to fail - mine still passed the braking efficiency test, but they said they were too far gone to be left potentially for another 12 months. It is suprising how bad the inside face gets compared to the face you can easily see through the wheel, the rust almost laminates the surface. You really need to get under the car with a torch, or get it up in the air.

Be careful, dear boy. Tis a common scam (no other word for it) by some OPC to recommend replacement of alleged heavily rusted discs. In fact if you speak to a good indy you will be told that discs can take a couple of skims (much cheaper) before they can be considered to be wrecked.

My indie does not have a skimming machine - but he takes the disks off and a skimming specialist picks them up, skims them, and has them back to him same day.

My local independent has a skimming machine. Providing the discs are thick enough it costs £60 a pair to have them skimmed. The inside face of mine are rusty but I'm leaving them till the spring before I have them done.
