Rust!!!!

Hi All

Having just recently spent a bomb getting some rust removed from my driver's side wheel arches etc of my S2, have just discovered more rust on the passenger side. If you look inside the vent in the door frame with a torch (looking down to inside the sill under the door), there are obvious signs of rust. Looks quite bad looking in but very difficult to tell as it seems impossible to get access. Have taken a few pics and will attach, including the vent that I'm talking about.

A couple of questions:

- Should I be surprised that rust is forming here? Everything I have read tells me that rust isn't an issue on 944's. Am getting worried that I have bought myself a lemon (although mechanically its completely sound with all the necessary service history and maintenance work done).

- Should I be running straight down to the bodyshop to get it repaired, or will waiting a while untill my bank balance is better equipped make little difference?

- Any idea on cost etc of work required to get this sort of problem repaired?

Any input appreciated as currently filled with dread as to the potential bills coming my way.

Buy a can of Waxoil, and spray it all around then forget about it.

I'm with Slim on that.

Chasing rust can do as much damage as leaving well alone.

Granted you may have to do something in the end but a good dose of Waxoil and plenty of wax on the exterior paint does seem to hold it all at bay for years.

Get on and drive it and enjoy it. It is an old car, there will always be something to worry about, don't go searching for it.
 
There are companies who will come round your house (or place of work) and pump waxoyl into the sills until it runs out. This is a lot more effective than trying to squirt it in yourself with an aerosol. [:)]

Even if you do nothing about it, it's only a bit of surface rust after 15-odd years, so you've got many more years before any real problems occur. Get out there and enjoy it!

Ordered exactly one of those yesterday actually. Comes with a long hose to get right inside so should work pretty well. Probably a bit messy but nice and cheap and from what everyone has said is quite effective.

Make sure you do it on a nice hot day, and get the waxoil nice and warm, it is much easier to spray then. White spirit gets it off most things but it can make a right mess of the drive.

After Waxoiling, if the car gets really hot, you might find the waxoil melts and you could get a bit leaking out of drain holes.

Whilst, in most cases, the more you can get in the better, be aware of the melting issue, as noted above. Check that you don't block any drain holes. You don't want cavities filling with water because you filled all the drain holes up.
 
Bit late on this one - my 944T bubbled through inside to out on the anti chip coating on the angle in front of the rear wheel on one side. Scrapped the anti chip off and went straight through the metal - very upsetting. Repaired it myself and sprayed Dinitrol 3125 inside everywhere I could access and hope this keeps at bay. Was told Dinitrol 3125 was better at slowing existing rust than waxoyl as it has better penetration (!!) Noticed a few bubbly bits on the sill but left this alone and hope the spray slows it right down.
