Rusting Oil Filters

I had a bit of an oil leak from my car which was very quickly getting quite serious, so booked it in to get the cam cover gaskets done as this is the usual culprit for oil leaks on 993s. Although these were weeping slightly the torrey canyon like oil slick on my garage floor was actually caused by the small oil filter having rusted creating a small hole. Although the hole wasn't much to look at, in fact it was barely perceptable, obviously when under pressure oil must have been coming out like a pressure washer.

The indi had done the previous service but said he only changes the large filter at 12,000 miles, which is still better than the Porsche service schedule which states that the neither filter requires to be replaced at 12,000 miles, only the oil. This genuine Porsche filter was 18 months old, yet had rusted through sufficiently to pump out oil at quite an alarming rate. The slight oil leak escalated into a flood in a very short number of miles but as it was over the Christmas period I don't know if it was the pressure or the ongoing rust that caused the hole to increase in size.

Has any one else heard of this?

Oh yes!!, this is not uncommon but a good indie will ignore porsches rule and change both oil filters every time they do an oil change because in the grand scheme of things an extra eleven pounds and a few minutes labour is well worth it in peace of mind, Also the porsche schedule requires the main (tank) oil filter be renewed every 20k/12miles not just the oil as previously stated.

Yes and I agree with Colt. Thats why I change both filters every year regardless of mileage. Over the top perhaps but, cost is minimal, peace of mind considerable.

I had been asking for both filters to be changed at all services since I found out about Porsche's servicing schedule a while back (which I'm sure said neither filter but I'll bow to your greater knowledge) but forgot to mention it when I put it into a different indi for the last service. I had been thinking more about clean oil going through a dirty filter than a filter rusting away though.

Is this another example of Porsche bean counters as work?

I've been using Reading OPC for the last 5 years and every service I have had, the Oil has been done and they have done both filters as well. I know this as I couldn't work out why there were 2 different filters on my bill.
