Rustproofing?

Simple question (hopefully):

Has anyone any advice about whether we should be thinking about rustproofing the cavities/nooks & crannies etc. in our cars or should we leave well alone?!

Good point - I did a previous 944 Turbo I had but that was 17 years old and the galvanising was beginning to fail inside sills.

I've only done the front lower wheel arches around the plastic trim on my 993 and actually taken off the lower trim and cleaned the road muck out and painted dinnatrol 3125 (Name from memory) liberally around and over a/c and oil lines.

Be good to know if anyone aware of any common failure points as our cars age.

I'm not aware of corrosion in cavities. Perhaps the cars are just not old enough or the galvanising is very effective. However, mine has suffered from corrosion arround the windscreen aperture and also the bottoms of the front wheel arches (stone chip area).

The corrosion is being treated at a bodyshop as I type. I may consider some of the clear plastic guard around the bottoms of the front wheel arches as it will prevent new stonechip damage.

dont they go around the bottom of the windscreen also, if they have replaced the screen I have heard this is more likely

yes, think a lot of cars have experienced corrosion around the screen - i had a small spot myself... as i understand it, the cause is a small tear in the paint when the screen is fitted which then gets corroded as water tends to get trapped under the rubber windscreen seal (particularly near the bottom corners...

PP,

How did the bodyshop repairs go (to your front wheel arch bottoms)? Mine are pretty heavily chipped and I'm contemplating the same job (hopefully before it's too late).

Hi Rod,

I think our cars are better protected from the elements due to having wheel arch liners, especially around rear arches and door post shut area, might be an idea to keep clean just under all the wheel arches, i mean the lip that curls around to form a small sort of gutter/sill, i would imagine this could get full of dirt and start to corrode if not cleaned regulary, maybe waxoil might be an option ?.

Nick.

Good point Nick. Mine were full of salty mud when I got the car. Also stones can hit the back of the wheelarches & chip the paintwork. Shouldn't think your car shows any signs of that now!

I wonder if we need to worry about the sill cavities on these cars and under the windscreen scuttle (where the drain pipe descends down into in front of windscreen)?

Rod

Yes have also seen them stonechipped, not on mine tho - at the moment.

I would imagine trying to access under the windscreen scuttle would be very difficult without any major bodywork, i don't know but would removing the black plastic strips make any access ? - bit between scuttle and front wings.

Hi Joe,

The repairs were good. In the end I had the whole front end of the car resprayed. Partly becasue of the wheel arch corrosion but also because it had been poorly painted in the past and the paint was now beginning to lift. I had to take the car back because the bodyshop did a poor job of reassembling the car. However, they have redeemed themselves and the car is looking very good now. I hope it is some years before I see any more corrosion.
