rusty body work behind rear bumper

Never noticed it before but the thin metal sheet behind the rear bumper - which can be seen when looking in the engine bay - has rusted badly with a couple of holes evident.

Is this serious?
 
Only financially, if its the engine tinwork, its oh, shall we say about £500 or so.........................

So I won't be seeing my engine lying on the road in my rear view mirror anytime soon?

It doesn't look majorly structural so does it need fixing?
 
As far as I'm aware, its not structural - at least I hope not because mine has gone there as well. Trouble is that panel gets really hot and collects lots of oil, dirt etc and it corrodes quite easily. Looks like a swine to change.
These thin panels continue right round the engine and all are prone to corrosion. I changed the one on the nearside fairly easily. If I was ever going to have the engine out for a rebuild, I would definetly change all four panels - after comprehensively rustproofing them first. But don't worry - you won't look in the rear view mirror and see a Porsche engine lying in the road...
 
Cheers for the re-assurance.

Unfortunately it's now made it onto my "to do" list so I won't be able to stop thinking about it.

Anybody else tempted to take out a small loan and just sort out their car once and for all?

e.g.
Respray front bumper (peeling laquer)
Pull out small dents in bonnet and wing
Fit brake cooling ducts bought over a year ago
Fit and paint teardrop mirrors bought over a year ago
Replace rusty tinwork in engine bay
Replace worn and creased passenger floor carpet
Buy and fit 17 inch cup alloys
Fit larger 993 front brake callipers bought in July last year
Fit recaro pole position seats bought last summer

and these are just the main jobs...
 
Snap!!Our C4 is at the bodyshop and they just removed the rear bumper today,there are bars underneath the plastic bits made from metal-all corroded,loads of other metal bits all corroded need replacing,apparently
this is common on our era of road use(salt) 911s....[:(]
Hope it is all worth it in the end...Dig deep- find worms...gulp[&:]

When i was lookin for my 964 all the one's i looked at were rusting to some degree, some worse than others and like with yours complete with holes! When i had the car independantly inspected i pointed this out, hoping it wasn't serious. It wasn't you will be happy to know! Its just a pain to replace or refurbish ... because like already pointed out, it's the engine out. It's a shame it wasn't coated with something a bit more durable from new, like the rest of the car!. I intend to get mine done one day!
 
wow....loads of common problems with these beasts. hope porsche have got all the problems nailed by now as the prices of the cars never reflect the problems!

I have 2 ten pence peice sized holes in the same thin and flimsy metal piece behind the rear bumper also. My air inlet "trumpet" came off and flew into the engine fan on a drive home...started whining...looked in the engine compartment to find a shredded "trumpet" from the air box.
My windscreen heater fan thing is totally kaput. Al fuses in the engine bay and luggage bay have been checked...so looks like it could be an expensive fix.
Sell a kidney and have enjoyable trouble free motoring!
