Rusty cills & wings

Got my S2 back from Specialised Paintwork last week. They've done a nice job, it went in for n/s front wing bottom and n/s rear wing bottom but I took their advice and had the o/s front wing done too...good job we did, because they found the o/s A post was quite scabby!

Impressively thorough (unlike the last time it was done by the previous owner/seller)...they cut out all the rust and replaced it with new metal, still managing to keep the repair below the stonechip line (a good reason for doing it sooner rather than later). All finished up with Waxoyl both sides.

Very happy now, but as soon as I tick things on the top of my list I find I have more stuff to add to it!!

I'd upload photos but the files are way too big...how do you reduce file size on Photobucket?

Just put a link in your post to the photobucket files (when I upload mine they are automatically resized to 1024x768 by photobucket) - use the "add image" button

Hi Graham, my '92 S2 cab is in need of the same sort of tlc, an idea of costs would be much appreciated. How long did the work take? I'm based near J9 of M25 so Specialised would not be too far if they come highly recommended and I would have the reassurance that the job would be done properly and not just a cosmetic blow over.

Ben

All up it was ÂŁ1300 after PCGB discount...about ÂŁ400 each location seems to be the going rate. When this was discussed on here a while back this seemed to be about right. There were some who'd got it done for less, though.

Beware a cheap job, though... my car came with the invoice for the last time the n/s/r was done for about ÂŁ200, now found to consist only of filler and needed doing again after less than 4 years. No good at all unless you're tarting it up to sell....

At the rear wheel arch it's double skinned and the rust had started on the inner panel too, so fortunate I got a proper job done before it started eating into the cill!!

I'm in this for the long term, so happy with the cost if it gives me a repair that lasts...the bodyshop say they now do several 944s every month, so they know exactly where to look!

I would be interested in seeing the pictures of this repair work too please Graham.

Do you have before and after shots?

Tim

It was 4 or 5 days...we'd expected 4, then they took a look at the o/s/f and that added another day. I was in no rush to pick it up, and didn't want them to rush it anyway.

They'd also looked at/sorted the front o/s of the PU, bulging out a bit. Karl reckoned it might have been dropped on a kerb at some time, pushing the bracketry up. He used to have a 944, so as I've said elsewhere he's seen it all before.

There was a black 944 in the same week, having a bit more done, still in progress when I collected mine.

rav...I'll upload some pictures just as soon as I can make sense of Photobucket...

Hopefully I've just uploaded a shot of the stripped out cill/rear wing. If this works I'll do more!

Yeah that works Graham. Currently doing my drivers side (which was worse than that and a bit further forward), but expect my passenger side to look exactly like that when I get in there in a few weeks.

Interested to see the rest of the pics...............

That front wing looks just like mine did.

Well worth having it repaired properly, so that it'll be good for another 20 years as Paul M is fond of saying![;)]

I just wish all of the buyers guides in the mags etc would stop telling people that they don't need to worry about rust, as the cars are all galvanised blah, blah, blah[8|][8|]

And the whole side....a neat job with the stonechip and with the colour (my car's at least two shades of white if you look carefully!)

...but not as fast as red, Nick!!

Seriously, with the nature of this repair I'm glad we've not had the colour matching problems of a metallic. I guess that's probably OK these days....?
