Rusty floor pan

Hi all,

Thought I would share that painfull realisation that your supposedly clean and rust free 912 is actualy inches away from looking like the vehicles from the Flintstones.

I have prepared my wife to start running when the floor gives way finaly and we have to 'run' it up the hill and back home lol ..... ok, seriously though, the pan has been 'patched' (I hear oh-no's from the audience) and I am now on the case of the rear side window rubber replacement job ....

also, if anyone can recommend some good carbs (Andy Prill advised against Webers ) to replace my (expletives) Solex carbs, that would be fab.... long live the 912 (and 356) the porsche's whos owners are happy with the size of their ......

Hello Dimitri + welcome

Sorry to hear about the rusty floor, happens to the best cars.

I have some 40 dellortos with KN filters + 60mm velocity stacks and manifolds which could replace your solexs.

Let me know if you are interested.

Hi'a and welcome Did Andy not let you know about rebuilding your Solex's Andy is a fan of Solex so am I and I have a rebiult piar on my car and I am very happy with them. Cost £135 each to rebuild.

Hi Jon & Mark,

thanks for the welcome :).

NOTE - my 912 LHD is ....yes standard ...no rebores, oversizes, and seems to be nice and tight - had 2 owners from new, 1st owner 1967 to 1971 then a Berkley School teacher and she had the old girl until 2 years ago and have had her in storage since then !)

I would love to know how much you would like for the Delortos Jon (inc stacks and manifolds). I also need to figure out which is best - the guru Andy says he likes solexes (???) but many recommend the delortos (jet configuration etc) - any additional advice would be very appreciated ..... also will I have to set them up to get the old girl running ? (obviously its always best to get them rolling road setup etc ....but would need to save up and find someone near to Worthing / Brighton to do work soonish - ho hum) ..

Also my current solexes have very tired linkages, and I guess I would need to change these or fix the links somehow....so much to ask and learn....

Mark? .... where did you get yours rebuilt ? as this may have to be the way to go as regards cost for now. I need to get the old girl running and stable as I would like to use her daily (screams of shock! - a few cans of WD40 spray soaking the underbelly and weak spots may help get her through the winter lol)

BTW (I do go on sometimes) any good shocks/springs sets going? - nothing like the red Konis please I have as these currently feel like a block of steel (perished seals) - standard shock ride for a bit of comfort would be nice

You have three choices really.

Dellortos
Can be built to order for a 912 spec with correct jets, venturi's etc

Solexes
OEM and prob the best, can be rebuilt for reasonable cost

Webers
Great carb with lots of tinkering to be done, make sure you get the ones Andy sells as these are great! Many are not and were built for Fiats and don't have adjustable throttle pumps.

The choice as they say 'is yours'

The cheapest will prob be the rebuild Andy can sort that or get the number of the guy who did 912UK's....

Carburettor exchange will do a fabulous job of rebuilding them - the cost is about £150 per carb - better than sticking a pair of Webers on.

Good to see another '12 coming out - my car had the holy floor syndrome (and the rusty fuel tank support panel) but they can all be rebuilt with enough money and enthusiasm!

That's the guy Carb Exchange £135 +vat each come back like new I had to check the numbers to make sure they were mine.

How does £380 sound all in (in Germany at mo so no pound sign on the keyboard).

Ref rolling road I used a guy called Peter Baldwin between cambridge and standsted. He did a great job on my car, has been running sweet ever since (I think AJP uses him). Only cost 90 including 10 worth of fuel!

Are you going to the ACE cafe on the 11th I could bring the carbs down for you to see.

(popped one in Jon £, big brother is watching EJG)

Thanks for all the help chaps,

I have to admit to being a bit tight on the money side at the moment - house move and job hunting :( - but it was a serious enquiry, so I hope to be able to come back to you Jon very soon as I have been doing some research with regards to carbs and think that the dells may be the way to go for me.

If you still have them in a month or two - I can probably plead for the money for Chrimbo if all else fails lol .....

ACE - I will try and make it, but probably not with the porsche - don't trust her for the 95mile trip yet ... oh may do it anyway and live my old biking ways (just risk it).

Dimitri

I will bring the carbs to the ACE cafe so you can have a look. I can hold them for a few while I'm not desperate to sell.

Have faith in the 12, it will get you there[&:]
