Rusty Nuts!! (oh er!)

Hi Guys,

I just noticed that my wheel nuts on my Targa Gen 2 are showing signs of lots of rust.

I did do a search as I seem to recall others had an issue with some previously, but the less than perfect search tool could not find any search match.

So has anyone else had this issue recently and if so were they replace under warranty, or did you have a battle on your hands with your OPC?.

I know we have had a bad winter with lots of snow and ice, and hence grit on the roads, but I have hardly been out in my car lately, so wondered if it was a recurring issue.

Any pointers?

Thanks in advance.

Nige.

It used to be a common fualt with the Gen1 997, but I thought they had remedied it after a while.
I had mine go rusty after approx 8 months (on my Gen 1 997)and they were replaced FOC by my local Porsche centre.
I imagine it's still well in warranty so I would expect your local OPC to replace without quibble.
Cheers

Looking at the members survey will show the numbers and the mixed warranty responses..

There are aftermarket titanium and stainless options available though i'd be a little concerned the alternative materials may not have the same tensile strength as OEM steel. Wheel cleaners and salt are the most common culprits , though garages that use sockets that drive on the corners rather than the flats of the hex head when removing wheels can also be an issue.
For those with cars outside of warranty I suggest investing in some of the rust and cold plating products from Frosts automotive. These will restore the bolts and give an element of protection.

Cleaned weekly and with lots of a wax a few times a year - not one of mine has rusted in the 9 1/2 years of its life.

Hi

My 997 gen 2 was recently in PC Sheffield for suspected oil leak - non found. When I booked it in I mentioned the rusty wheel nuts and the rusty star shaped nuts on the brake calipers.

On collection the wheel nuts had been sorted out with 'special' paint as instructed by P Cars GB - they do look a lot better - but the brake caliper nuts had not been replaced or painted. I was told P Cars GB say the rusting of the caliper nuts is due to using unsuitable cleaning products - not very impressed with this explanation as I only use Zymol auto bathe.
