Rusty Nuts

evoke

New member
I noticed that several of my wheel nuts are horribly rusted. Is this normal for a 8-month old Boxster? Should this be sorted under warranty?

I've never noticed this problem with any previous (non-Porsche) cars i've owned.

It's a while since I've seen this topic come up (a first for this particular forum at least!)

Yes they should be replaced under warranty.

I'm curious - I have never suffered this, and I wonder if it is down to the wheel cleaner used?
What are you using Rumba?

Mark, i'm using the Porsche Tequipment Boxster wheel cleaner from the wheel cleaning kit! I've got Turbo Look II 18" wheels and have only ever used Porsche cleaning products. I have both the car cleaning kit and the alloy wheel cleaning kit.

It's booked in for a service in a few weeks so I will ask the OPC to change the nuts. I only noticed the rust yesterday when I was cleaning the car.

The car is exposed to the elements as I don't have a garage but all of my previous cars have also been parked outside and their wheel nuts never rusted! In fact, they were treated to some fairly cheap cleaning products over the years which included Fairy Liquid and Persil. No rust, though :)

The alloys themselves are unmarked and in perfect condition apart from a scuff mark on one where I kerbed it :(

Rusty nuts was a frequent topic on Boxster forums a few years ago - in fact I have not heard of it since I bought picked mine up. That was 2.5 years ago so I thought maybe it was fixed now.

I have only ever used Zymol, then Swissol, wheel cleaners on the wheels, and (if I'm allowed to say this) my nuts are free of any blemishes(!)

I'm curious to know who has had problems with the wheel nuts rusting, and what cleaner they are using. If there is no pattern then fine, but wouldn't it be ironic if all the sufferers used the techquipment cleaner[&:]

You shouldn't have any argument from the OPC if it is under warranty. Let us know how it goes?

I know im going to regret saying this but.

I've got rusty nut's

Incero wheel clean....but i feel i should pointout that the nuts had already gone rusty before we started using Incero, can't remember what we (thats a royal we...meaning Larry) used before,i think it was something from Halfords[:-]

Seems to be a common problem, probably caused by heavy-handed tyre fitters???

You can get aftermarket chromed ones, but not cheap.....

Might try repainting and baking in the oven...... when I have some time in a year or so

Original set of tyres.

First noticed a 'cloudy' residue on the wheel nuts a few months ago - it looked a bit like limescale! Now some of that has turned a rusty brown that I am assuming is genuine rust. Not good for a Porsche!

I have Rusty nuts too, It was one of about three items Porsche picked up and made comments on during its service. The others were a couple of Scuffs to the under side of the bumper.

Anyone know the cost of new nuts?

The OPC have agreed to replace the wheel nuts under warranty during my forthcoming service. Bear in mind that the 'key' to undo the nuts will also need to be replaced as it is unique to one set of wheel nuts (so i've been told).

My nuts are fine.

I have 17" Boxster alloys. Careful cleaning with warm water and Turtle Wax shampoo does the trick (as used for the rest of the car). Usually get odd looks from the neighbours as I'm elbow deep in the rims cleaning the *inside* of the wheels!!
