Rusty (s)cills....

We've recently been out of the country for nearly six weeks, so during that time I thought I'd take the opportunity of having some cosmetic tidying done "" re spray faded PU with couple of scratches and both cills which were showing some signs of blistering.

Expecting all to have been done, I was dismayed to find the job hadn't been done, as when they'd sanded back to bare metal, it's exposed several 2p size holes on the offside cill and I'd suspect the nearside has a couple of similar.

We had a look inside on Saturday with an endoscope, and the rust seems mostly confined to the outer skin, possibly helped by the drain holes being clear.

My garage is happy for me to source the parts, so I guess we're looking at a pair of outer cills. I'd only use genuine parts, so wondering where's the best place to buy"¦. Exeter OPC?

What sort of price am I looking at?

The original quote for the work was £600(cash), but I wonder how much that'll go up by, plus the parts?

Beginning to wish I hadn't embarked on this now, those blisters didn't look that bad "" just goes to show what can lurk below a few pimples. Also, no sign of rust is visible through the vents in the B pillars, so it came as a bit of a shock.

Sorry to hear this, but best to get it done, you wont regret it in the long term. I got all my panels from Exeter, they should be amongst the cheapest and they offer great service. I suspect you could be doubling the original estimate quite easily, depending upon their hourly rate. Outer sills were something like £130+vat IIRC.

Thanks Peter, I did get them from Exeter - £140 ea inc delivery.

And yes there is a Santa........as Xmas Eve, I had a call to say it was ready - and not before time []

In addition to the cills and the PU, I had the wheel arch/wing bottoms done and the whole car has been machine polished. The difference is truely amazing - all the Porsche Pinkness and water marks have disappeared and it really looks the Mutts. Keeping it like this will of course be the problem.

Don't know the final bill as they let me take it away without payment. Not many places would let you do that eh? I did however give them a £350 cash advance since they'd been good enough to give me a free loan car for 5 weeks. I'll post up when I know the final amount

Well I got the final bill yesterday - Peter you were spot on with your estimate[:(]. It was with some embarrassment that the garage owner explained how much more work has been involved to do a proper job than the makeover originally quoted for.

Bottom line was £1200 as a part cash price. However, as well as a complete machine polish, they've also removed a small annoying kink in the offside rear wheel arch which was there when I bought the car nearly 5 years ago. In fact I'm not sure how much hasn't been resprayed [:)]

Adding the cost of the sills and new stone guards from Bert, the total runs out at £1530 which I reckon is pretty fair for the finished result. I understand that £2k is not uncommon for a proper job on the sills alone - anybody else had theirs done recently?

Oh yes...and if you'd wondered how much difference fitting new stone guards makes, if yours are as grubby and pitted as mine were, the answer is huge - mine are virtually invisible now.

That's pretty fair - anything up to £2k is common once you add in all the extra bits that most cars need by the time the cills have rusted!

Wolfie
Had mine done - inner sills too. Cost a grand - cash. Like you, far more than I'd been quoted or expected []
I posted some pictures of the work being done - the guys were accused of being cowboys - due to some interesting jacking arrangements....
Still better done...
It also gives rise to the strap line below (my wife has only ever heard of the £400 quote....) [;)]

Mine was 1400 quid! Pics are here but it 'ain't pretty!

Yes, thoroughly flooded(whilst making sure the drain holes were kept clear). A small patch was needed to the offside inner sill before treatment. On close inspection, both sides have been completely resprayed in addition to the front bumper. The bonnet, badge panel and light covers have polished up well, but it was suggested I have them done to finish it off perfectly.

Thanks Peter - not only does it look so much better with all the the imperfections removed, but I've convinced myself that I've addded at least half the cost to the value of the car...in my dreams[:D][:D]

Colin - I pointed out to SWMBO that it was less than her Peugeot 206 had lost in depreciation in the last year.... top tip - worth a try?

Jim - what can I say?....'ain't pretty' should read 'pretty ugly'....1400 quid to sort that lot out sounds something of a bargain.

I think it looks absolutely great & definitely worth more: when I saw it in autumn, I didn't think the Guards Pink front suited it particularly.

Are you going to get a UV proof outdoor cover, to keep it from fading?
