Rusty Wheel Bolts

My new-to-me 997S is spoiled by very rusty wheel bolts and locking wheel bolt.
Thinking of replacing them with stainless steel bolts.
DesignTech do a set through Design911.com that are on-sale now. Does anyone have any experience of these. I want my car to look good but I am too old and boring for "Bling".

200nm - ouch. Glad I don't have a 997 to change the wheels on, 135 is enough for my weedy arms[8|]

Sorry Stephen I do have the answer - I posted it on the Boxster forum a couple of weeks ago - copy and pasted for you:- -------------------------------- No need to do either folks Save yourself some money - try the following:- -Take a plastic bottle (ie a small coke bottle works fine) and cut the bottom off -Then carfully cut the top off until it just fits over the wheel bolt -Take a can of Silver paint and spray a minute amount of paint down through the bottom of the bottle. -Inspect - you may need another minute dusting - Good as new eh You will need to repeat this process every time you remove your wheel bolts/nuts - no one likes rusty nuts

Or you could do what I did "Remove nuts,degrease and wash then pop into your bedroom nuts in hand and dry them with the wifes hairdryer ready for painting" Then she walks in[]

As I said and was reiterated by John, it's only the tops that can be seen and therefore painted. Unless you've got a really odd socket for your wheel nuts the paint won't be touched when removing or re-fitting the studs and will last quite a while before the demon rust returns. I have been reliably advised that this is how PCs treat them.ORIGINAL: Porker993 Clyde, how long do you think touch up paint will withstand being torqued to 200 nm ?Â

Hmm still not keen.  It's not something I would ever do on my 993.  If the nuts corroded, I'd replace 'em.  I don't like the idea  of torquing up rusty nuts, even to 130NM. I've had my 993 9 years, and I've never had this problem.  If it's a 997 problem, I'd be pretty peeved If I'd bought a £80k vehicle and the wheelnuts went rusty in a couple of years, and the OPC painted them[]

I agree and would never advocate painting alloy nuts to get them looking new again Porker. I replaced all sixteen plus the four locking nuts a couple of years ago because they were getting corroded. But they're steel studs on the 997 (and all recent Porsches I believe), not the lightweight alloy nuts you get on real Porsches [] so there really isn't a safety issue with painting them. I think PCs only paint them when they're traded in, if you went to complain that your two year old 997 had rusty studs I rather suspect they would hunt you.

Thanks for the advice. My car is a Gen 1 2006 but had only done 11,000 miles when I got it 2 weeks ago. It is pristine except for the wheel bolts which were very rusty, far worse than my Boxster S which I had for 5 years from new. I didn't have the balls to try John's method as in my hands there would have been spray paint everywhere! I have removed the bolts 2 at a time, cleaned them with fine sandpaper and wire wool before painting them with Hammerite smooth silver paint. After 2-3 hours natural drying I baked them in the oven (150 centigrade fan oven for 1 hour) before refitting after cooling! They look pretty good with only a touch of "bling" compared to replacements. We will see how they last. If they don't I'll replace them but total cost for the above was £16 (paint, thinners, brush) compared to maybe £180 for OEM bolts and locking bolts. Stephen
I've had my car since March and already all the wheel nuts are rusty. I've been dealing with Guildford OPC recently over a few things, one of which are the wheel nuts. They said its because of what I'm using to clean them with and haven't yet committed to whether they'll replace them under warranty. What do people clean their wheels with to ensure this doesn't happen? Still think its a bit of a rubbish excuse as I've used the same cleaning methods on all my previous cars and never had anything like this.
