S.2 Front suspension.......

At nearly 140k, my front suspension is starting to feel a little tired and would probably benefit from 'refreshment'

I had a quote from a specialist of £728 inc VAT to fit a pair of genuine Porsche units [:(]

With a bit of shopping around, I've found Sachs units from Design911 for £299/pair inc VAT and delivery.
Exeter OPC quoted £462 inc VAT/delivery

Am I right in thinking that Sachs were original fitment? - would these be identical?

I'm guessing it's the same as the story with many other parts e.g fog driving/fog lamp.... something like £120 if you buy it in a Porsche box from OPC or around £75 if you buy it in a Bosch box elsewhere.

Are there any other options to consider bearing in mind it's only for 'ocassionally fast' [;)] road use, no track work?

Design 911 have S2 struts listed at £120 per corner. Last time when I looked I am sure they were listed as Boge, but now the website is non specific. It is specific about the rear shocks though, and given they are relatively inexpensive I'd council you to do them too.

Apparently it's an easy DIY job and if it would ever stop raining I'd get out there and find out for myself. Good luck.

Yes Chris it's the front struts I mean. Cheapest price I've found is Exeter OPC £386 + VAT + delivery

James, Design911's are £120ea + VAT + delivery, total £299. As their website doesn't specify, I phoned them and they told me they were Sachs. I don't have the facilities, tools or way with all to do the job myself, so I'd be looking o get my local garage to do the job.

They quoted 4 hours labour which would come in under £200 with VAT, so this sounds the way to go. Appreciate the rears are cheaper and easier to fit than the fronts, but having just spent £600 on a service, they'll have to wait til next month.

So the question still is 'are they identical parts'.....the Sachs from Design911 and the Porsche ones from Bert or OPC?

The aftermarket suppliers will say yes they are identical.

I certainly trust Bert and the ones he sold my for my S2 a few years ago were labelled up as Boge.

Hi Richard,

Have you considered going down the other route of fitting replacement strut inserts? Both myself and a certain other forum member have done this using koni sport adjustables from Proven Products. Maybe slightly more economical than complete replacements. I was surprised how easy they were to fit and I have no complaints so far.

In fact, I still have the strut shells (belonging to Mr Smith) that were sent to me by Mr Parker. Somehow I managed to stub my little toe on them yesterday. Ouch!

Oooh I'd forgotten you still had them. We'll have to sort out getting them back one day (not that I'm in any rush)

Sorted the standard inserts from Bert, and fitting/geometry from my local specialist - Outstanding ! Had the rears replaced at the same time and including labour for fitting and the alignment paid £550

It has transformed my car

Rich

Good to see you've worn the suspension out, Richard!

I let my specialist supply the parts. I know they make a big mark-up, but it still works out about the same as I'd pay with Club discount and they're happy to take responsibility if the parts supplied are wrong. Which, they often are. []

The labour price you mention is about the same as the guys I use, and as we are neighbours I'd suggest having a chat with them. I've found many times that their knowledge of the odd short-cut can shave a lot off the final bill.

Seem to remember I owe you a beer? Must catch up soon!

Paul, I guess Bert's would be Sachs now as they took over Boge?

Phil - Hmm....inserts may indeed be another option I'll cost up and compare. Nice avatar BTW [;)] [:D]

Rich - £550 for fronts and rears fitted sounds much more palatable.

Paul McN - Certainly worth me having a word with them. First though, I'm going to get the steering U.J changed as there is a bit of wear in that too. Still usually have an early beer at the White Horse on Mondays - I'll give you a bell

Charles - Even £700 all in would be acceptable
