S v 2.7

Hi Guys,

I have driven a few Boxsters (two S and two 2.7) in different environments e.g. city and country over the last week... in an effort to decide whether to spend extra cash on S..

While there is an obvious difference in performance, I personally found it small, and I did try and hammer them both a little..the acceleration is no doubt better on S but I still cannot decide... This is my first Porsche and I will use it for normal day to day stuff and I am very interested in taking it out the track and learning how to drive a performance car appropriately, hence I lean towards the S...

As a novice driver starting out. I am interested to hear expect opinion... all the web reviews go for S... and if I was given an opinion I would say S... but I have not won lottery yet so 5K more is a lot :) ......

Appreciate your comments.

My short 2p worth is go for the S if you can... I had a 01 2.7 and whilst it was a great car, I decided to upgrade to an 03 facelift model. I drove the S and fell in love with it.

Previously I had an 944S2 and what I missed most in the 2.7 was the torque. It just never felt that torquey. I have an S tiptronic now - lets just say it has the punch, the torque and the noise... In my opinion, it is a completely different car to the 2.7 in its character.

But then again, as I dont know your budget, I cant really say... Then again in Ireland its different - I paid 73,000 euro for an 03 S with 9k on the clock... prices are nuts here.

well fellow Dub here.. but live in London now.

Its just a question of whether its worth it.... combined with a October wait !!! ...if the S was there now, I would pay it..... but October wait seems like a nightmare, especially after driving them last weekend... I want it all and want it now...

I have a 2.7 cancelled order avail now...which is perfect fit with extras I want... and its so tempting.. so I dunno maybe I should wait.... feckin nightmare...

Anyway lets see.............

I think you answered your own question, they are different but is it £5k worth of difference? If you are using it, as I do, as your daily driver you will notice the mpg for sure. I assume that is an issue otherwise you wouldn't be worried about the price tag. [8D]

JCB..

I had the same dilema as yourself a little over two years ago. I went for the 2.7 and i'm not dissappointed. I've driven the S and 996. The difference will only be noticed when driving hard particularly on the road. On the road you struggle with the 3rd gear over takes compared to the S. You have to plan it a little more. I drive mine hard and find i can play with the bigger stuff on the road. I did a track day at Castle Combe on the 29th of April. It was the 1st time in a car. I found that at the beginning of the day i struggled with the others out there by the last session i didn't find myself wanting an S. I wanted a GT3. I use mine daily The economy is fantastic. The only thing is i am looking at replacing the car soon and i can't help but think maybe i should keep it and stick a 996 3.6 litre in it. I've heard rumour that it will fit. I would go for the 2.7 then wait till you can run rings around the car and then upgrade. You might get the 1st 3.4 litre boxster by then.

Penfold.

out of curiosity, what year did u buy yours........ I assume car was only a year old...?

I bought it mid last year. The car was a little over priced, but I got an insanely good deal on a part-ex of my old one - so it all balanced out. Then again, it was just over 2 years old and had 9k on the clock...

As the car came originally from the one OPC in Ireland, I was able to get a copy of the original order when the car was new. Needless to say that whilst the official price is around the 90k mark new, this car came with a total price including options of 108,000 euro. And that my dear friends translates to about 74,000 pounds.

It used to below to a guy who obviously had more money than sense... it was one of 3 cars he owned. AFAIK he traded it in for a SL55 AMG (looooser).

Then again, it is probably one of the highest specced boxsters I've seen in Ireland. just without sat-nav for some reason []

At least you guys dont have to pay 1400 euro per annum just for road tax !

I think it just has to be an S.......I need to sleep peacefully not wondering (S S S S express Boxster going around in my head)... after I buy 2.7...

So tonight I see an approved S at a wapping 49K... with 3K miles...

Buts its the exactly the spec I want, which is rare in used... with one darn exception it has the PCCB which as you know costs 6K... which I don't need, that said the Spec new is 56K!!!!.. but I am starting to come to the conclusion its only money...... and listening to Sheryl... "if it makes you happy, it can't be that bad"..........

Penfold,

Those prices are just insane...

49K buys one hell of a lot of brand new Boxster and for a used example thats madness IMO The PCCB ain't worth a penny so I would start your offer at 43K. Good luck either way and if you want a true measure of this cars value phone a few wanted ads and see what they value this car at I think you will be unpleasantly surprised []

Gordon,
The car was just coming up to 3 years when i bought it. I think the comments by john Bond have it about wright

well nevermind the purchase went up in smoke today, a call to OPC and it was sold.. so it was not meant to be.... I am back in 2.7 land :)

Incidently the 49K S was 56.5K as a new build.. it was fully loaded with special this and that and all the usual..... was going to offer 45. anyway someone bought it!

So now my new dilema...

I have a new boxster ready to go new in the country with the following build, everything with the * I wanted.

[FONT=default sans serif,verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif"]Porsche base model[FONT=verdana,geneva"]U2 GT Silver Metallic[FONT=verdana, geneva"]RA Cocoa full leather*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]P73 Bose/Wind Deflector*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]342 Heated front seats*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]405 19" carrera classic wheels[FONT=verdana,geneva"]446 Coloured wheel centres[FONT=verdana,geneva"]454 Cruise control[FONT=verdana,geneva"]475 PASM*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]576 Top tinted windscreen[FONT=verdana,geneva"]573 Automatic Air-conditioning*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]635 Rear parking assist*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]692 Cd changer (6disc)*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]R03 Standard radio[FONT=verdana, geneva"]EBE Aluminium switch panel Package[FONT=verdana, geneva"]XMZ Leather rear console[FONT=verdana, geneva"]XSC Porsche crest Embossed[FONT=verdana,geneva"]V5 Cocoa Hood (dark brown)*[FONT=verdana,geneva"]R01 Manual Transmission*

It would be bought had it PCM !!!!!!

My ideal order would be the following:

Arctic Silver Metallic
Cabriolet roof in Cocoa
Leather interior in special colour Cocoa
ParkAssist
Top tinted windscreen
Sport shifter
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM)
19 inch Carrera S wheel
Wheel centre set
Fully automatic climate control
Cruise control
Heated seats
Porsche Communication Management (PCM)
Telephone module
BOSE Surround Sound System with wind deflector
CDC-4 six disc CD autochanger

Both are basically same price......

it PCM worth the pain of waiting on a new order... given I even have Sat NAV on my mobile...

Also any comments on the short shifter???

Thanks
GG

Definitely not - especially if you consider that your SatNav on your phone will likely be updated regularly - whereas the Porsche Sat-Nav seems to be stuck as of 3 years ago.

Buy the car - and spend max £500 on a TomTom 910 - and get regular updates for a reasonable price.

TELL THE SALESMAN THAT IS WHAT YOU WILL DO - maybe if more people actually told Porsche how pathetic their sat-nav offering is they would get the message...

We said this in 2001 when we ordered our car. Nothing seems to have changed...
