S1 Lux - Running rich!!

Hi Guys/Gals,

The car i bought on saturday seems to be running a little rich and as i'm going to the isle of wight on the weekend i'd like to get it sorted before them. Does anyone know any specialists that won't cost the earth (i know what im asking). Or at the very least some tips so that i can sort it myself. My other car is a Triumph Stag so i;m not shy to get my hands dirty.

Many thanks

Doug.

Doug,

While I know very little about the way the FI on 944's work, I'd definitely start looking at the temperature sensor, and associated wiring. If this goes wrong then it will tell the ECU that the engine is colder than it really is, which will proceed to throw more fuel in. (This is a common problem with VW's of the same era.)

If someone can tell you what resistance the sensor should have at a couple of given temperatures you can measure it very easily with an ammeter. Look at the wiring as well - is the plug OK, are the wires at the end of the loom OK?

The other good news is that it is as easy to fix as it is to check, and you should be on your way to the IOW very readily.

Your location says Windsor/London/Milton Keynes so I would try either Northway,RPM or Promax who are all in that triangle

Thanks for that Paul. I live in Windsor, im from Milton keynes so have strong ties there and work in London i have that area fairly well covered. [:D]

If it helps I use GT One in Chertsey for my 2.7 Lux and they have never been anything but brilliant yet!..

I have seen reports of rich running when the cap and arm are worn - i'm sure I have... may be a good first point to look and see how old and worn the cap and arm is? Just a thought.

When mine ran (very) rich I changed the DME relay - should carry a spare to be on the safe side - and it never did it again over the next 7 years!

Get one and try it.

Good luck.
