S2 Battery

The battery has started to go on my S2 "" any recommendations for a replacement battery model?

Car currently has a Bosch Silver (not sure of exact model etc).

There's a Yuasa shop nearby so I'm tempted to go there rather than Halfords or similar.

I fitted a Bosch Silver, standard rating (63 Ah) which I bought from Promax...they were cheapest at the time, and insisted that 63 Ah is enough, and what they always fit. No problems so far.

Some suggest that a larger capacity battery gets the engine turning over better, but my car lives on a battery conditioner and seems to be OK.

Euro Car parts Bosch S4 @£62.4, S5 @ £86.40 or a S4 74AH @ £80.40[:D] Always find these excellent value.

I recently fitted a Varta E11 Blue Dynamic 574 012 068 (096) from Eurobatt at £60.59 (vat and delivery included) - 74 ah and cc 680. My 2.7 Lux had a Bosch silver which suddenly wouldn't charge up fully. No particular reason for choosing Varta it just seemed a good price.

My Bosch came from Carparts4less and was in my receipts from the previous owner and it had a 5 year warranty. It was 3 years old and had stopped holding a charge. Rang them and was told to take it into Euro Car Parts who swapped it for a new one and I still hve 2 years warranty left [:)]

It's the S5 and is on my Turbo

The problem with the S2 (and i presume other 944's use the same battery?) is that it is a less common size. Porsche used what the industry calls a T6 (sometimes also referred as an LB3) box size. The much more common H6 (L3) has the same footprint but is something like 20mm taller. I presume porsche wanted the T6 as it fitted under the boot carpet.

The reason I'm telling you this is because the H6 (L3) being more widely used (mega volumes in VW, FIAT, GM), there are loads of different specifications available and tons of development work going on in the industry on AGM batteries and on enhanced flooded batteries for start/stop applications (which are increasing all the time).

The T6 (LB3) is favoured by Ford but Ford aren't fans of AGM batteries which means there's no real aftermarket for AGM batteries in this box size. The good news however is that there are Ford models coming in the not too distant future which will have the next generation of enhanced flooded batteries (EFB) which have been developed for their latest start/stop system. The aftermarket will therefore have to start stocking these new generation batteries to support the demand from Ford owners and we 944 owners will have the benefit of accessing a level of battery performance which hasn't been available in our box size up to now.

So basically, keep your eyes on the market for technology branded as "EFB" in the 944 box size and buy one of those when they become available. It will be far superior to anything currently on the market.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I'm going to need to pick up a new battery for my S2 before the weather gets much colder, it's clearly on the way out!

I see that OEM spec in the hand book is 63 Ah. I'm assuming from the comments above that there is no issue going for a 70 or 74 Ah replacement? As I'm replacing the battery it seems to make sense to go for a slightly more powerful item, especially as my car lives outside and sometimes sits for a good few days in-between drives.

The Bosch S3 (70Ah) seems like good value, any comments welcome:

Cheers in advance!

As long as the battery physically fits then there is no problem with slightly more Ah.

I have a 74 Ah Bosch and with a fresh started motor it spins and starts so much quicker [:)]

Agreed but the Ah rating doesn't make one jot of a difference to how fast the starter spins - that is dependent on the CCA rating (cold cranking amps). Think of it like a boxer:

CCA = how hard he can punch
Ah = how many rounds he can go

Generally speaking, batteries with higher CCA also have higher capacity (Ah), because they have more lead in them. So fitting a higher capacity battery might well make the starter spin faster but it's the CCA that's doing that, not the capacity.
