s2 cab, 1: Hare, 0! Bumper removal

Hi guys, I hit a hare a few days ago in the s2 I am afraid to say closing speed on the poor devil was well over a ton, and it was running away from the car too!

It s taken a chunk of paint from the front bumper, I have a had a quote to repaint it and its not bad if I deliver them the bumper for them to just paint and return to me.

No just beofre i go scrobbling about on the floor, how easy is the bumper removal? I seem to remember its fogs/driving lights out, then there are bumper mounting bolts going upwards from them holes.
Do the wheels arch liners need removing? How amny bolts and where, and do they generally come undone easy, or should I get access to a "windy gun" before i get into it!

Cheers for any help guys.

It's fairly straight forward, but time consuming.

Get the front end in the air, remove the undertray and "batwing" cowl under the bumper. The arch liners don't need to be removed, but do need to be undone at the front so you can hold them out of the way while you undo the wing bolts. There are 3 bolts at both wing corners, and either 2 or 4 (can't remember) in the middle through the lower grills by the radiator. If you have headlight washers, they are best left on, and the middle tube disconnected. Then you can dismantle them with the bumper off, as the pipes aren't long enough to hold the bumper far enough from the body to get in there.

I think thats it. Is sounds simple, but getting there takes time, and slowly does it is best.

You don't need to remove the any of lights to get the bumper off, and it is easier to unbolt them from the inside of the bumper when it's off. It is easier to get it all back on with the indicators out so you can feed the wires through the holes first though, as you can't reach up to reconnect the drivers side one when the bumper is on due to the oil cooler being in the way. I spent ages trying to work out how not to have to take the oil cooler off, and that was the best way. Oh, and have an assistant help to hold it while you reconnect everything, it's a bit awkward to hold yourself and do it (guess how I know[])

There are instructions on Clarks Garage, but they are about as useful as Jack up car, undo bolts take bumper off.

Hope that helps.

All doine, took me about an hour. I was flumoxed where the bolts in the centre were, and eventually thought, er, maybe there aren';t any.................and it just popped off!!

So off to the paintshop tomorrow, just hope it matches now.........how many variants or guards (sorry indian) red are there now.....?!?!

I broke a couple of "wing" bolts, holding the lower spolier to the bumper, and found I could not remove the ns fog light lens and the screws are well rusted in! time for a drill I think!

No doubt new screws will be time for me to be screwed! I got three plastic screw cap covers for round the windscreen pillars interior trim today from OPC, at near £4 each!! They are not even 1cm diameter!! crazy!

I am missing one of the clear plastic covers from over the fog light screws. OPC want £35 for a pair, (one pair per light!!)

Love it!

hahha, thsi one was pretty quickl, just not quick enough!

Poor little devil was deposited over 400 yrds of road and both verges!

Careful drilling out the light screws; they are corroded into a brass insert bonded into a plastic backing and it's very easy to spin the insert in the plastic backing or shear off the lugs they are bonded into, then you need new backings (or mastic for a rough job).

Its a good job they are German quality bulbs then, I have not replaced them in 6 years!!

I think I may well have to drill the whole lug out and refit some stainless allen heads into a captive nut which I will have to stick in there somehow, (gripfill anyone!)

It wont matter having a different bolt head on show, I will be able to cover it with my £35 a side clear plastic covers!! [:(]

BUmper was dropped intoday and they hoped would be back tonight but it will be monday lunchtime now. Hope it looks good, it will be clear over base as well, not solid colour gloss, so it should fair better in this high UV climate of ours!

I didn't take a photo for comparison,........... but I do recal a hare shaped hole in the front bumper...! ! Hopefully it will be gone when it comes back!! [:D]
