S2 cab re commission

So I am looking at a 90,000 mile s2 cabriolet that has been unused for 11 years. The last service was 2002 when the belts and brake fluid were done. Since then it has done 400 miles! The current seller has got an MOT a few months ago (not sure how as several bulbs don't work) and had paint work done so now it looks pretty fresh.....

It is missing or showing:
-both front wheel arch linings missing
-front bumper under tray missing
-abs warning light

Only obvious mechanical issue is a noise when touching/depressing the clutch pedal.

Why are we drawn to such things......

Would you?
What would you re-commission?

Rob.

I've got a front bumper under tray spare if you want it Rob, it cost me a whopping £120 in a moment of madness, but I'll let it go for half that.

Dear Elliott and Cater racer,
Thank you. Please hold on to them both for a while. If we go ahead I'll take them........

Any thoughts on the clutch noise and what the long lay up might affect?

Robert

Well they say belts are age expiry libel so I guess you should think about that, but if the've only done 400 miles I wouldn't worry, maybe a cover off and inspect?

The clutch release bearing is pretty trivial, anything mechanical like that is easily replaced , body rot is the terror, so if the body is sound, check inside the sills by opening the doors removing the small grill and poking a torch and see if you can spot any horrors.

I would assess it for rust first and then decide whether it is worth doing. Have a look at a few threads on here and you will see these cars can hide their horrors quite well. I'm not saying all 944's are rusty but one which has sat for 11 years must be a candidate for the rot setting in.

You have to wonder why it was missing those parts. Has it had a front end prang at some point? ABS fault could be simple or incredibly time consuming and expensive to fault find and resolve. Any pictures pre the "fresh paint"? Are you going to be cutting out rot in 12 months time underneath the paint?

Then you have belts, chain, slippers, rollers etc. Brake lines, fuel lines, brake overhaul (can be expensive, plate lift, discs & pads all)... never mind the suspension. Big old service, checking the hood works and is waterproof etc. Tyres? Are they all 11 + years old? Budget for 4 new tyres. Not even worth going there unless the car is solid and is very very cheap (and there's no such thing as a cheap Porsche! [:D]).

Dear Simkin 911 and monkey three
I've inspected all 4 corners with a torch and lifted the rear carpets and battery/tyre well and all seems nice and tidy (and dry).
I agree with the concern regarding the missing plastic arch liners and bat wing under tray. Seller didn't even know they were missing which adds to the negativity. At least you can see all the mechanical bits and pieces. And of course the overspray..

Seller says front paint covers up a dent in the central section under the badge.... The bonnet doesn't line up either but then that could just be out of line......or of course a prang but the inner wings are all dusty and original...

So not one spec of rust, great sills and arches.

All 4 tyres were new -11 years ago.....

And the roof works fine albeit that it is original. Interior is leather. No rips or holes but could do with a re-fresh.

Funny how you get drawn to such things. Cant make my mid up if it's a dodgy car, honest seller or an honest car/odd ownership

I know my post sounds quite negative. I guess it boils down to how cheap the car is and how handy you are to fix it. Good luck !

It sounds like it could be either a great opportunity or "must to avoid", worth getting a second opinion, get someone who knows 944's along and have a detailed look.

Just in case any posters are interested to know I made offer of 4,500 on the basis it need >2k spend. I pointed out that even then there is a provenance issue which wont go away just because the owner changes.

The offer was declined by the seller!

Thanks for your inputs.

Considering that Copperman05's car went for a shade under £7k with it wanting for nothing (and I really mean nothing at all!) I would say that your offer was possibly a little generous in all honesty!

Where in the country are you? If local to Warwickshire I am happy to check out a few 944s if you wish :).

Nice one thanks.
I live in Worcestershire so neighbours you could say...... the idea is for a third car which my sons can use for club life as the insurance hurdle for the eldest is getting less. My first porsche like many was an s2. As I keep telling the lads the time is getting nearer where good 944,s are going to appreciate and it's always been a great car to own.

Think this might be worth a look, at that money, could throw a few pounds at it and not lose anything.

I'd be tempted if I did not love my S2 so much [:)]

Cheers
Paul.

Hi Paul,
A project car like that is interesting but not at that price, especially at 180k miles. I'd value it at 1500.

There's a few on e bay at the moment around your offer price that look quite tidy.

or

There's a nice white one with a burgundy roof on pistonheads.

your offer was on the generous side I would also say, the seller is daft just because its a Porsche doesn't mean its worth silly money.

Move on and look for a better car.
