S2 Cab. Re-spray ...

Being Quoted between 1800 to 3000 for this job. It's a 1989 S2 Cab. Gold/Silver color (don't know the exact name of the color) in good'ish condition but touch ups are not an option and as per normal there is a palm sized patch of rust at the front wheel stone guard. Any idea what I need to be paying to get a full paint job done. (besides the obvious earache I'm getting from herself).
Also, the roof is getting a bit faded. Anything out there to get it back to a good matt black and keep it waterproof.?

I have an '89 Cabrio and was quoted about £1100 for a full re-spray (sounds like the same colour as yours - Linen Metallic (a champage gold colour)). However that was based on me stripping off any parts and replacing them afterwards. I wanted to do the job properly so had planned to remove lights, door handles , spoiler, bumpers, under sill trims, stone guards, etc. I've decided to use the car for the summer and do all the paintwork in the depths of darkest winter!

The paintshop I am using in Devon did a red one last year for £1,400 I believe. I didn't pay atention to it before it was painted to see how bad it was but it looked like a great job when I saw it after.

Hmmm. they tried that same codology with me too. Asked me to take off all the parts becuase if they were to do it and if it broke then they didn't want to be liable. As far as I'm concerned, if they break it, they fix it. I'ld be paying about 2k for labour anyway, so I don't plan on doing any labour myself.
I'm driving all over Gods creation these days also so maybe getting a respray is a bad idea right now, but when is it a good one?? I think i'll just have to get rid of one of these kidneys and get it sorted. Of course, when the paint is gleaming it's going to make my roof look old. Will this ever end !

I think £1800 would be a good price. You get what you pay for and there are a lot of cowboys out there. Ask exactly what they intend to do. Is the whole car going to be primed or only where repairs are necessary, and the good bits just wet flatted. Second option cheaper, and if most paint good I would go with that. Are they going to do the door shuts? Unless they are perfect I would have them done. Do they intend to flat and polish paint or leave in gun finish, or only do the really obvious bits?

I would take as many parts off as possible as it keeps the cost down, and if you put them back yourself, you'll know half the screws are not missing.

With regards to the vinyl roof, you could get that sprayed at the same time. Details of company that sell vinly paint are on thread "window parts" on next page.

Another little point - will you be getting any guarantee?

The paint shop will be taking off all panels they said. I think I'll just go ahead and get it done. Otherwise I'll be just banging on about this for the next 6 months and will get it done in December when the car will be under cover anyway. Brilliant advise lads. Good call on the guarantee!! I'll have to get that one sorted out.

I beg your pardon?

I of course meant "under a protective cover" as opposed to having 24 hour special branch armed security.
Although , with a new paint job, I might check that out. 8)

I think Dan may have been ribbing you about the suggestion that the car will not be getting used in December. We like our 944s to be driven year round on here [;)]

Do you mean that the trim will be taken off rather than the panels?

A quality bodyshop will paint the manels in situe to get an even colour & texture accross the whole car.

Items like the front bumper & rear embelisher may be taken off, as more of it is painted than can be reached on the car, and it will require plasticiser before painting anyway!

Stuff that should come out / off:-

Windscreen surround (not the windscreen unless you want to buy a new one!)
Side & Rear Windows, plus rear hatch
Rear Lights, side indicators, and front fogs / indicators
Any plastic bits (washer jets etc)
Rear bumper (and remove trim within bumper)
Wheels
Number plates

The list goes on - I'm sure i've forgoten something!

Door handles
Front/rear badge /decals
locks if doing struts
rubber door trim
door mirrors
aerial

isn't the aerial built into the front wind screen??

Alpine

Don't know where aerial goes on this model - never even seen one! Just looked out of window at my old 944 which has aerial on front wing. Looks stupid on wing - think I'll move it. Do you know where they went on "newest" 944 models?

They went in the screen in the 944 after oval dash. If you mean the "944 S3" then they were in the back of the roof. It would be much chaper to copy that and you can put one there in a 944 if you want to as there is a cutout in the double skinning to allow for it. I have put one there in two 944s now for DAB.

Indeed. Ariel attached to the windscreen. I need to be within 10 feet of a mast before it will pick up a station though. Yet another thing I need to get looked at. The engine is all sorted so I rather listen to that with the roof down anyway. I am costing getting all new seals around the windscreen/window and the little rubber bit around the keyhole on the bootlid. Alsot the PORSCHE sticker on the back will need to go, so that will have to be costed too. Looks like I'll have to put rubbers back on, cos I can't afford a kid after this !!
