S2 Cab wiper mechanism

The wiper mechanism in my S2 cab has finally worn out - the ball joint linkage just got loose now.
I wonder if the wiper mechanism in the cab is the same as other 944 models and how much do I expect to pay new/used?

Charles,

If the 'balls' are ok, not pitted or to small you can rplace just the arms and you should have change
from £30.00. One is about £7.00 and the other about £15.00. If the balls are worn it is easier to replace the whole
mech. I replaced mine on the 68 (basically the same) and it was £170.00 from Porsche, I decided a 2nd
hand one would not last long anyway. It took about 2-3 hours to fit.

Just wonder what does the whole linkage mechanism include i.e. the two arms and the two spindles? Part numbers please?

If the arm has popped off the drive ball on the drivers side chances are it will continue to do so with a new arm .It is under a lot of strain due to the acute angle .(poor design) I tried a new arm on my Lux and it worked for a while but as soon as the windscreen got drier the increased drag popped the arm off in the most inconvenient times. I tried bits of wire and elastic bands even putting my hand out the window and wiping the windscreen with a rag whilst driving along for weeks before I gave up and bought the whole assembly .

If you can find a way to remove and replace the spindle only then yes a new arm will work but I could not see a way of getting the wiper arm spindle out

At the moment I use some elephant tapes to hold the ball and the connecting rod together and it seems ok for the time being but I do want to get them fix.
If one can't get the spindle off - what's the point of replacing the whole mechanism?

Am I right that the whole mechanism (i.e. the wiper rack/frame) is no. 5 (Part Number: G477955041B) as illustrated in the diagram? The spindle is monuted onto connecting rod which is not available seperately?

I loosened the locking nut on the wiperarm spindle but I couldn't find a way to remove it because it jammed on the bulkhead below. It just wouldn't clear . I may have missed something but I remember trying several times and I am pretty ingenious usually. If the link arm was on top of the bearing ball it would probably stay on but as it pops on from underneath it has gravity to help pop it off.
I think I tried to centre drill the ball so I could fit a spindle bolt and lock nut but there is no access .

There might be a repair possibility by fitting something to the link-arm to replace the plastic socket which will clamp around the spindle ball rather than just a press interference fit

Charles
the spindle is bolted through the bodywork and has an angle welded to it at the bottom the other end of which has a brass ball joint .The link arm has a plastic socket which is a press fit on the ball of the spindle arm . Mmm need a decent picture really to explain this.

Here is the detailed front wiper system parts diagram and OEM part#. I think some guys have managed to get away by just fixing the long connecting rod '5' (944 628 034 00) without replacing the whole wiper frame '6' (944 628 961 00).

But it seems to me the wiper systems are different on the pre-85 and post-85 models where the pre-85 has a seperate short connecting rod '3' (on the o/s) and a different long connecting rod. This may explain why some found it easy to replace the o/s connecting rod without the need to disturb the n/s end - I think they maybe the pre-85 models.

It looks like on the post-85 models, replacing either the connecting rod or the frame will have to get under the plastic cover and discconnet both ends etc.

it is possible to put your hand in under and prize the link arm off on a post 86 but you have to be very strong and ignore the pain lol. to put the new arm back I used a long metal bar as a lever fulcrum to force it back on both ends

Sorry for loading the wrong diagram. I think this one is the correct one for 87-91 models and the frame is different from the previous models where there are two seperate connecting rod (the o/s one is slightly longer than the n/s one). I am thinking of replacing the o/s conecting rod '5' (94462803400) but not quite sure how does it attach to the n/s connecting rod '3'.

charles you have the answer in the first response from Peter really. Just go to Bert (berlyn services ) online (do a google) and order up the O/S wiper link arm . He has a detailed price list. Then go fit it. Its simple. Just lever the other end of the existing link arm off the motor end using a long thin bar /screwdriver or whatever by prizing them apart so it pops off. Fitting new is just a question of pressing the new link arm on both ends by a bit of ingenuity and brute force. You don't need to take the whole thing out the car .
It ain't gonna get done from the armchair lol. We'll all be here if you need any advice half way through . Worse that can happen is it falls off again and you are £15 out of pocket and then you'll need to remove and renew the complete assembly. or you can't manage to refit the new arm and have to run it into the local garage.
Give Bert a ring or email him he can advise on part No and price of whole assembly if you go that route.
