s2 caliper rebuild

im thinking of rebuilding my S2 back calipers and 928s4 (mo30) fronts whilst they are off for paint - does anyone know where I can get a rebuild kit - or at very least some new piston rubbers. Ive been quoted crazy price for the rubbers - there must be alternatives?
I rememebr the s2 rebuild being covered in 911 porsche world a few years back so parts must be out there?
 
I think you're pretty much looking at crazy prices. The callipers are Brembo built and they have an 'arrangement' with Porsche not to sell parts to anyone else, so if you want seal, pistons, plates etc its Porsche or no-one.

IIRC a brand new calliper is only around £300 (and then you could Ebay your old ones in need of a refurb)

Porsche OPC,s are the only place to get the piston re-build kits....Aprox £13-£16 per piston kit...[:mad:][:mad:][:mad:][:mad:] They can get very costly to do.....
IF anybody finds another source, PLEASE let us know.....[;)][;)]
 
I all seriousness it might be cheaper to buy new calipers from Exeter OPC (say you're from the forum for discount) and eBay the old ones.

I think I will just concentrate on the fronts for the time being and do the rest later still £160 for the pair is better than £300 a corner! I cant justify that as they arent even for a porsche [:mad:]

Actually that sounds pretty reasonable to me if it includes the piston and seals. Each calliper has 4 pistons so thats a max of £64 per calliper plus the slider plates. You could fully refurb all four callipers for under £350
 
That is so weird!

I've just re-built both front brake calipers on my 944S2 (what a co-incidence) having had the car 10 years. It was more difficult than I expected and I learnt a lot that I want to pass on in detail.

I've found a good source of seals for the calipers and took digital pictures of the re-build and am going to put together a helpfull web page! I've painted the calipers with caliper paint (temperature resitsant) and could not help myself but paint the "porsche" script in guards Red touch up paint.[:D] Should look nice through the wheels.

Off to the garage now to finish the job! Heres a taster!

[8|] err, yes[>:], thats the passenger side front just after I'd got it off the car and got those pesky little bolts out which fix the stainless steel pad guide plates. You can see the corrosion that built up on the caliper body. This has pushed the plates out and partially siezed the pistons.
 
How do I change my profile to "PCGB member" ?? as I've just re-joined a few weeks ago.

BTW, I took the inner wing splash guard off and found two rotten brake pipes[:-][:eek:] I'm going to see if I can get some new ones made up locally with the correct couplings and bends. They both go to the gold coloured Bosch device hidden under the wing. Is that something to do with the ABS system???
 
Just to report that after fitting some new brake pipes and bleeding the callipers, the newly re-built brakes feel fantastic! [:)] Wish me luck for the MOT today.
 
Nice one. Now I know you are donig a how to guide, but is there another one out there at all? I had an article in POrsche and 911 world mag form a few years ago, then sent it and the car over to a local garage to have it all done, (I sourced parts etc) . 5 months later, the car was still in their yard, untouched, I went and got it back, all the parts etc, but surprise surprise, the mag was missing!!

I remeber it was a copy of the mag with a yellow car on the front, that's a bout it, I cant even remeber the year of it, never mind the month, so as to get a back issue!!

Anyone know or remeber this how to guide in the mag? what month was it? Anyone got a copy to loan me......!>!>>!??

I remeber it all seemd ok enough apart form getting the torx bolts off to remove the stainless plates. I seem to recall oxyacetaline is recommended to get the bolt red hot, quickly, so as not to melt the caliper....!?!? (scary!)
 
I think oxy acetylene would be overkill- a butane blow lamp was sufficient in my case. I have another method of removing those pesky bolts from the callipers- it does help if you have a Mig welder, though not absolutely necessary. There are a few guides on t'internet, but there are things they don't tell you in each case.

I think a garage writing such an article will assume a level of knowledge and miss out bits that are obvious to them but not so obvious to the keen amateur.

Anyway- car passed MOT, brakes gave good figures all round! [:)] they stop the car very sharply and in a straight line, no judddering [:)]

Will do write up with lots of pics over the next week or so.

The above pages are the rebuild of WUF's calipers to go on to baby WUF. The last link gives an insight to the invoice for the parts. Would I do it sagain ? No. Cheaper to upgrade to big blacks in this case.

Having said that, when the original brakes were on WUF, they never inspired confidence. When the calipers were all fully rebuilt, new drilled discs and EBC RED ceramic pads, braided lines and Castrol SRF fluid, they do now feel SUPERB, especially on track.
