S2 chip/performance enhancement

The S2 engine does benefit from a good chip in terms of driveability but I don't think you'll see anything like 20bhp with an off the shelf chip. I would be very wary of buying a chip on eBay unless you know the vendor as naturally a bad design could cause harm. I'm not sure why this vendor adds 300rpm to the rev limit, we experimented with that on my car and there simply seemed no point. I used a Promax chip which I thought was very good, I then had a rolling road remap that saw further gains although this is several times the cost of the chip.

There's a thread somewhere about the search function not working as there are now too many posts, I believe if you limit the dates of the search then it will work.

Limit the search to three or six months and it should work. Lots of threads on S2 tuning, I'd not even consider buying a chip from anywhere other than a well-respected source.

rolling road remap hey, where can you get one of them done a porsche specialist or any garage?

There don't seem to be that many people that are experts mapping 944's. I've had my car done by Wayne at Chip Wizards twice (the last time slightly less sucessfully) but I'd only really recommend it if you want to get the ultimate out of lots of other changes. I'm not sure on the current cost, but between think it's in the ÂŁ400-500 region.

I've now gone the Piggyback route (it turned up yesterday from Vitesse [:D]) which will mean I can tweak the setup as I need to, although this is probably overkill for most applications.

Check out Ricks normally aspirated league table at http://www.cannell.co.uk/944%20UK%20League.htm to comapare the results of standard cars and modified. You'll need to look at each individual cars data further down the page to make a true comparison. I know that mine in position 5 is totally standard (listed as Debra Smith) and Peters at number 1 is quite heavily breathed on [;)]

Most owners of chipped S2's comment they are much more driveable on part throttle and responsive (though I haven't had a go in one to compare)

Paul's got it spot on, that's exactly the feeling you get, ultimately it knocks a few years off the perceived age of the car. A MAF knocks an awful lot more off by giving you razor sharp throttle response, although it's not a cheap fix like the chip.

Mine came chipped and I have to say compared to the previous S2 this thing is awesome. Its pulls strongly from 1000rpm .
It will accelerate in any gear at any revs. It is so responsive I cannot understand why they wern't supplied this way from new.
Its definitly worth the cost

They were not supplied that way from new because Porsche had to create a map that would deal with a wide range of petrol qualities and octanes as they had to make the car safe to run on 'any old petrol'. These aftermarket chips are mapped to run on good quality, high octane petrol that we've come to expect in the UK so you can take advantage of that better quality fuel.

Note to self - Must get a chip for my S2!

(Not for the power increase, it's for the drivability increase. But then headline power figures are for juveniles and delinquents only, to quote the late, great LJK Setright.)

You may also find the fuel economy improves too, which is another great excuse [:D]
This was certianly the case on my 2.5. I was a bit disappointed when I didn't get the same on my S2, but have just discovered that what I believed was the original chip was actually an after market one (and not a very good one given the performance improvement the Promax one gave).

Late yes. Great? Not so sure. I found his writing style a bit condescending and pious. Still, better than Clarkson I suppose.

Peter,

I didn't realise that you swapped a one performance one for another ... interesting that the aftermarket ones are different (the cynic in me suspected that they were all from the same original source data, and hence would have the same effect.)

Ian,

Nope, I have been a longstanding fan of LJKS. His writing style is very highbrow (and I can see why it can appear condescending), but as a foil to the popularising nature of Clarkson et al it is most refreshing. To see a motoring column written largely in Latin is worlds apart from the txt-spk and semi-soft-core-porn which runs through the likes of most mainstream motoring publications nowadays. Having said that, I think the most appealing point is that he treats enjoyment of the car as being something to be lauded, and taken seriously - whereas motoring enthusiasts today seem to be vilified by all.

Oli.

Can't argue with that Oli. Mind you, back in those early days of Car magazine even Clarkson was a good read. Obviously didn't pay as much attention as you and I during his Latin prep though.

Caeceleus in hortum est.

I must say that I used to love Setright's musings too, especially his love of engineering in cars, although I was never quite convinced that his grasp of the engineering physics was quite as adept as he professed it to be. His love of all things Bristol was also nicely eccentric in an English gentry type of way.

I always used to love Clarkson's column at the back of Performance Car and I do salute his rantings against the PC & H&S brigade...[:D]
