S2 Clutch Upgrade

It looks like my S2, after much deliberation and head scratching (by a number of expert) does not require a gearbox rebuild to fix what was suspected to be a bearing noise but a new Clutch.

In light of this, is it worth installing an upgraded clutch and what are the options? I've read, on previous posts, that there is a clutch for the cup model, will this fit an S2?

Any assistence with this is really appreciated.

Good news, in that no gearbox rebuild is required.

The clutch you are refering to I believe is the one where the rubber bung/donut in the centre is replaced with a spring arrangement. I helped a fellow member install one of these on his S2 recently and he's reported back saying it's been a vast improvement.

I don't believe the clutch plate surfaces are different however and I'm not sure if there's an uprated clutch for big power applications, but I doubt you'd need/want one assuming your S2 is stock.

Thanks you.

The car's standard so I doubt I need to upgrade the clutch to deal with the power, but if the mechanism is improved it sounds like it might be worth the extra cost, I'll check with my local OPC.

Has anyone else had a clutch vibration that's reverberates through the torque tube/transmission? Diagnosed by a judder in second gear on a downshift.

Shuddering on the downshift from 3rd to second..???
Yes my car did that [even after a new clutch + resurfaced flywheel], + i believe so do a fair few other S2,s...
As far as im aware there isnt a uprate clutch for the S2.
But as has been said the replacement doesnt have the rubber dampening fitted anymore. So that has to be a + ve...

Can't help with diagnosing the judder on downshift ... but I'd be looking at engine and gearbox mounts (shooting in the dark a bit there.)

The 'standard' clutch you buy now (as in, the one that is most readily available) is the one with the spring centre, as James has described. The rubber-centred one is no longer (commonly) available, and the spring centred one is a significant improvement.

Reference your clutch, I had the same if not worse problems than you, I replaced the engine and gear box mounting , checked all the drive line bolts , back axle etc etc, I went through everthing and the car was jumping up and down on gear change with all sorts of knocks and bangs.

The clutch , was ok in the sense it worked as it should, I drove it like a nutcase to make the clutch make a noise it never did,

after weeks of doing everthing on the drive chain side of things, i removed the clutch, well it was in bits but worked, I had rubber balls in the fly wheel housing that you would not beleive,

With the new sprong loaded standard clutch fitted, the car was perfect, I still do not understand how the old clutch was still working and silent when it was k--put.

My S2 exhibits that exact symptom if I don't rev-match the downshift to 2nd. Unfortunately, I can't add any more comments beyond what others have said on this thread.

But just as an FYI, I did find an old Rennlist thread about judder and it seems this is not an uncommon problem: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/216091-clutch-judder-in-first-gear.html
