S2 Cooling Fan - Problem or Not?

Hi Guys, Just bought an S2. is it normal that the cooling fan should run the whole time the ignition is switched on? On my old 944 the fan only cut in when the engine was hot. Not a major problem at the moment i know, but will it be in winter, and is it normal? if not, what is likely to be the culprit?

It should only run when the engine is hot; not sure what your fault would be but sure someone else on here will do!
 
Could be something to do with the temp switch in the radiator. The normal failure mechanism for this sensor is that the fan runs on continuously when you switch the engine off therefore draining your battery, however in your case it could be some other failure mechanism of the temp switch.

Does the fan run for a few minutes after you turn the engine off or does it switch itself off altogether? Maybe the previous owner had a problem with the fan system and rigged it up only to run when the engine is running rather than fix it properly. Might be worth testing the radiator switch somehow.

If you trace the problem to the fan relay don't buy one - i've got a spare in the garage you can have.

By the way the fan is a two speed fan - it has a high speed when the engine is on and a low speed when the engine is off to save the battery.
