S2 dying out at low revs

My S2 has started to cut out at low revs for example having come to a stop at lights whilst it will tick over ok when you pull away the engine dies it is also misses quite badly when driving at under 2000 revs if you are doing 30 to 40 in fifth it Kangeroos along rather than driving just steady. At top end it seems fine it still accellerates like a train and I left an old impreza in my wake the other day so I am happy with that side of things. I have also noticed that it is a reluctant to start now it's getting colder but is ok once the engine has been running. I recently changed the dizzy cap and the MAF, injectors are working fine and I have sorted out some cracked hoses tp the manifold so I am happy that it is not any air leaks. I also bought a new DME relay which has made no difference.so I am thinking possibly the engine temp sensor. This is perplexing me and any advice what be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure about cold start , my s2 used to do the same thing .I carried out repair to air flow meter (youtube),tracks worn.
Now driving perfectly.

I had this problem a few months ago.....fortunately just before it was about to go into a well known indie on the south coast. The switched the throttle position switch and all is now well again.

I cant promise, but it is reasonably cheap and easily accessible. Maybe borrow one from a friend to see if it makes a difference before you buy.

Could be AFM as mentioned, also might look at the reference sensor. You only have the one on the S2, you can check it with a multimeter. See clarks garage for details.

Could well be DME temp sensor - caused mine to idle very low and cut out, but started off as a minor nuisance and got proressively worse. Checking it with multimeter was tricky as seemed to be an intermittent fault. Sensor is only about ÂŁ15 from ECP, and changed in minutes if you have the right (deep) socket.

I did the same repair toAFM myself and didn't make a difference the only thing it could be I think now is the reference sensor. Does anyone know where the throttle position switch is.

TPS is on the buterfly where cable mounts , any sensor on engine thats faulty will cause these problems , also fuel presure to high or low , dont forget rpm sensor on flywheel , had a golf gti few years ago and ht leads were failing caused this fault but would clear at high revs , i changed plugs and it was ok for 2 days then fault returned

my guess would be the engine temperature sensor too.
If the car runs fine when hot it probably is.
The only other thing I can think of is the auxillary air valve.

Might be worth checking the cold start injector also .It should give a squirt of fuel on cold startup.Make sure the electrical connector terminals are clean .

If the car picks up well with a squirt of easy start when cold then that would suggest a fuel starvation issue due to the cold start injector and or engine temperature sensor not working.

Wot Peanut Said. ^^^^

The only other option would be to carry on looking at the HT system. I have had similar symptoms on a Golf - very sulky at low revs, fine at high revs. Turned out to be a dizzy cap tracking. You have changed yours, but how old are the plugs and what about the leads/dizzy arm? All worth a good check.

How old are your HT leads and plugs?

Saying that, my S2 used to start ok on the old knackered HT leads (you could see one or two arcing at nighttime). If you do decide to go for OE HT leads as a precaution the cheapest place I found for them was PCT cars in Coventry.

There's an S2 plug leads bulk-buy going on here:

Now now, let's not have dissension over minor differences between the superior 944's. We can save that disdain for the owners of the turbo models - poor slow chaps that they are! [:D]
