S2 exhaust removal

Starting the restoration of my S2 now that it and I have both arrived in Sweden for a while. First job is to remove the exhaust but I'm already confused by my system. I was expecting to find the cat would be "bolt in" with a flange at either end however it appears to be integrated with the front pipes and then there is a 3 bolt flange at the back where it bolts on to the rest of the system. I was planning to replace the cat with a straight through pipe and was expecting that to be a bolt in job. But it seems I'm going to have to get the welder out. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Also, any tips on removing this behemoth?

Cheers,

Tom

The S2 exhaust is simply two parts. The front pipe has the catalytic converter and bolts up to the exhaust manifold. The rear pipe contains the rear box and bolts to the front pipe via a three bolted flange and hangs at the back from a btacket with two bolts IIRC.

Most people who remove the cat have it replaced by a piece of straight stainless tube that is welded in place. Mine cost £120 about 6 years ago. At the time the front pipe with cat cost well over £1000 from Porsche

Thanks Paul. I've successfully removed the rear section today which allows me to proceed with dropping the rear beam and I will contemplate what to do with the front section in due course. Having seen pictures of decat pipes for the S2 I had thought they would be a bolt in job. Also, the PET which I checked after my original post shows the front section of the S2 exhaust as 2 parts with the front pipes and cat joined by a sleeve. I wonder if this is how Porsche now supply this part? I know when I bought my fuel lines from the OPC they came in two halves with a joining piece and the guy told me it was to save money on shipping very long parts. I guess the same could apply to the front section of the exhaust?
I will probably end up cutting the cat off and welding a straight pipe in its place.

Cheers.

I removed my cat and replaced it with a stainless steel silencer, made to measure with a clamp on each end. Cost around £50

I bought a 6 foot length from my local motor factor and cut a section the weided it in to replace the cat.Cost me £11.
