S2 for sale... maybe

Just a feeler, as there's the possibility of a Golf R32 coming along shortly, which I really must have! Ideally, I'd like to keep the S2 as a weekend toy, but don't know if that's going to be feasible financially or logistically.

So here goes - It's a '91 J plate 944 S2 bridge spoiler model in gorgeous Cobalt Blue, which I bought almost a year ago as a project & have subsequently spent a lot of money restoring it to its former glory. It currently has 109,000 miles on the clock, backed up by comprehensive service history, including a fully stamped up book by OPC / specialists, plus previous MOTs. bills etc.

The current spec includes the following: 17" Turbo Cup replica alloys with good tyres all round (original D90s also available), black Porsche script/vinyl interior with optional sports seats (larger bolsters), Full Dansk stainless steel exhaust with Promax decat pipe (approx 6 months old), clear front indicators & side repeaters (have the originals also), Nardi Torino 3 spoke leather steering wheel (plus original one), Kenwood CD/mp3 player.

When I bought the car It had a thorough 'going over' at Strasse in Leeds which included the following: all belts, tensioners, oil seals replaced, cam gear checked for wear, gear linkage replaced, leaking water pipe replaced, all 4 brake calipers refurbed & a 6000 mile service.

Approx 6 months ago I had extensive bodywork restoration done to sort out the usual 944 rust issues. This included: replacing both front wings, repairs to both rear wings/wheel arches, sills stripped & rustproofed (inside & out), & repainting both sides of the car. I have a photographic record of all this work.

As you can see, it's had all the majorly expensive 944 stuff sorted, as well as a host of other minor things I've not listed, so should provide any prospective buyer with trouble free ownership for years to come. The only bad points are an occasional clutch judder when pulling away, which it's always done since I bought it, & was deemed not bad enough to warrant replacement by Strasse, stone chips to the front end, & a couple of tiny rust bubbles on the rear panel. Both these areas have not yet been repainted, & if I were to keep the car, would get them done to make the bodywork perfect. Oh and a broken clock! everything else works perfectly.

Apologies for the long post, but I honestly believe any prospective S2 buyer will struggle to find a better one which has had all the usual issues already sorted. I've been using this as my everyday car & it's been 100% reliable, ready for someone else to drive & enjoy!

Now - price... to date the car owes me over £8000, which I know is pretty much irrelevant, but as this has been spent on things which a lot of other 944s will not have had addressed & therefore will save the next owner potentially thousands of pounds, I think justifies my asking price of £5000.

That's a nice car. It is "worth" five grand I think, but of course, anything is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay. If I were you I would keep it after what you have invested - much nicer than an R32! Seriously, in this climate a buyer for a £5k S2 could be a long time in coming even if the car is "worth" it.

Keep it - I bet you'll regret it if you sell & will be back looking for another within 6 months ......[;)]

I have to wonder whether you are pricing the vehicle as you are in order to keep it? A friend of mine is currently buying a nice Cobalt '91 for £2,000.....

£2000 for a s2 thats cheap.it would make me think theres something wrong with it? may cost him 3000 grand to make it a nice one? my s2 cost me 5500 six months ago with fpsh and only 75.000 miles.worth every penny..carl

It turns out that he hasnt bought it. It looks nice in the pictures, but the sills havent been repaired in the best fashion. Theyre perfect on the outside but when you remove the air vent a hole can be seen. It turns out that repair panels have been fitted over the top of the old ones (for as much as Id expect to have paid for a proper job ie: £500-odd!).

I have to say though, when James says that "the paint is poor"; it may just mean that it hasnt had a recent anal-clay-bar session..... [:D]

I believe that I would still buy it, but I realise that Im looking for something different to many owners, James included.

mmm... a 2 grand S2 is 2 grand for a reason. Same as a 5 grand S2 is 5 grand for a reason [;)]

Cheers,
Robbo

I guess there are 2 ways of looking at buyers. There are people out there with no idea who will buy a car because it looks like a bargain. Sometimes they get lucky, more often than not they are on here with a list of "little niggles" that turn out to be a fortune to fix, and often the cars are turned around quickly or worse.

There are many of us who would rather pay a bit more for a car that's had work done well. That could range from a good S2 that's had the bodywork, cams etc all fixed that's easily worth £3k over one that needs a lot of work. It would extend to thinking that a very tidy Turbo with good mods is not worth less than £8k-£10k, or a fully restored concourse-condition turbo from a well-respected member should fetch near the £15k asking price.

There are very few truly exceptional cars out there, and there are buyers for them if you can wait. Robbo's car has been very publically catalogued here, from him first seeing it, buying it, finding out what was wrong and how he put it right. That's why it has a value above an e-bay shed which might well be worth £2k but you know full well will cost you as much again.
