S2 gearbox

Anyone know which Audi an S2 shares its gearbox with? Yes I know there are differences but the part I need has the Audi stamp on it.

After paying £80 for an amal valve which is £35 on a cossy thought I'd try my luck.

I've heard the outer casing is the same as an old early 80's Audi 100 (but this could be internet hearsay [8|]).

The 'coggy' bits inside are different though (technical term [])

nowhere yet, just wondered if the lux one would fit. how much would i expect to pay for an s2 box and where would you recommend i try for one?

It would fit, the ratio's are not too far off but the lux box is thought to be weaker. not sure if it is or not.

i'm not a hard driver and times are hard in the wallet department so i may well go for the lux box!

It would also depend on the year of manufacture the gear boxes differ in speedo drive

Oval dash cars have an electronic speedo pick up where the older Lux with the early dash is cable driven.

More accurately; the series two uses a gearbox mounted pickup, wheres the series one car used a cable driven from the front hub. A 1986 car will have the correct type, although some of the last series one cars had this later type gearbox fitted.

Unless it's almost a give away I wouldn't for all the reasons above, the boxes really aren't anywhere near strong enough, I've killed a few [] with a lot less torque than an S2. Some of this was due to my, erm, spirited driving on airfields etc, but other times I imagine its been down to a previous owners treatment of the box, something that you can't really predict.

I'd also imagine fuel consumption may suffer as motorway cruising will be at a higher rpm, and so on

I swopped my noisey Lux box for a s2 box last year and Iam really pleased with the smooth/quieter box that I now have[]

is it a long job to change, do you need to remove the torque tube or will the box come out rearwards?

The box will come away from the torque tube. The downside of that, is that the box has to come out to move the torque tube in order to change the clutch...

These are North American market ratios of course, but its a start.
