S2 hesitation/jerking

I have what seems to be a common problem on high-mileage S2's - jerkiness and hesitation at a constant throttle opening, that disappears on acceleration.

It's driving me absolutely potty. Everything - and I mean everything - has had a thorough going-over due to a recent problem with misfiring and cutting out in traffic - but this problem remains.

Searching previous posts points to wear in the AFM. Mention is made that rebuilt items are available for about £250 - I don't want to go to the expense of a MAF. Can anyone recommend a source? Euro Car Parts don't seem to list them. Any advice appreciated - anyone BTDT?
 
Give Nick at auto2000 a call on 01234 210012. He had a couple spare when I was going through a similar problem (turned out to be the ECU).

Alternatively Jon Mitchell 01202 462951 can usually lay his hands on most things.
 
Make sure it is the AFM before you shell out your hard earned. Mine suffered from a similar problem until last week when it simply wouldn't start. My indie eventually diagnosed a faulty engine temperature sensor - £15 + labour to fix! she's been like a new car since.
 
Am i right to assume that the AFM would become just dirty with age/use etc much the same as the ISV does, and if so is there any way we can clean them to prolong their life or is it always just a case of replace with new when they give problems?
 
Is the S2 AFM the same as the turbo one? If so I had a nearly new one fitted a few months ago which i'm considering removing as i'm thinking about fitting a MAF. I've not made a decision just yet as i've bigger fish to fry at the moment (finishing off the house due to baby on the way) but it's something fairly high up on my wish list.
 
The ISV gets a varnish on it from the fuel/air mixture whereas the AFM only sees air, so it won't get dirty in the same way. It's the electrical track of the AFM that gets dirty/corroded over time and use.

I know it's not the ECU, I have a spare and swapping has no effect. Similarly the ISV has been cleaned & tested. Ditto the temperature sensor (I've had that one go bad on me before - twice - so it's the first thing I look for). All the acronyms have been checked from a to z and it's really a case of there being not much else it could be.

I'm not sure but I think the turbo and S2 AFM's differ, but I could be corrected.
 
I'm sure the AFMs are different. On the S2 it's the box with the alu waffle effect top (I think), and on the Turbo its mounted straight to the side of the airbox.

Where abouts is the temp sensor situated - mine runs slightly rough untill she's warm so this could be worth changing on my cab.
