S2 Rear Rattling Noise

I was hoping someone could shed some light on a tinny kind of rattling noise coming from the rear of the car. It only seems to do it when hot - It must have something to do with either the gear box or exhaust however it quietens slightly with the clutch pushed down. Any ideas gentlemen?
Regards Andy

Is this when you are stationary and in neutral?

If it is then it's simply the standard noise that the gearbox makes when in neutral. Press the clutch in and it goes away

Hi Paul - No it makes the noise when moving - I notice it yesterday going into a car park and it sounded dreadful. Its difficult to know if it makes that sound all the time as the exhaust note just drowns out everything.
Regards
Andy

My Gearbox makes similar noises, fairly common to some level I think. Mine can get quite embarrasing sitting at the lights after a long run. The only time I managed to take it in to a specialist for a look it was quiet, as he didn't have the opportunity to take on a sufficiently long, fast run for the noise to be noticeable (gearbox oil hot).
However it has been doing it for over 20k & hasn't given up yet.

944 gearboxes do not make that noise when they are "fresh" but as said above that noise is fairly normal and it does mean an overhaul is duly required.
There is no need to look into repairs until the rattling gets noticely louder over a short time or unless the noise itself becomes "irregular" (imagine the balls of the bearings moving freely between braces as the cage has self-destroyed), suggesting one or several bearings are really beginning to give up the ghost.

My S2 has a rattle which goes when the clutch is depressed. I worried about it when I first got the car. It was particularly noticeable when going through tunnels with the windows down etc. I thought is was a clutch release bearing but had two independents look at it when servicing the car and was told it was normal gearbox noise for the car with 115k on the clock. Have done 15k since and it has not got any worse - I barely notice it now.
