S2 Stereo fitting question

Hi Guys,

A familiar question I'm sure you've heard before but I've had a search around the forum without much luck.

I'm in the process of trying to fit an aftermarket headunit to my 1990 S2 and having some trouble matching up the ISO connector of the new stereo with the original wiring. Im replacing the factory headunit (a Panasonic F35) and it looks like nobody has played around with the wiring before me!

Im hoping somebody wise can help me identify the wires so I can connect the two together. The wires I have (coming from the back of the original headunit harness cage) are as follows:

Red
Orange with white stripe
Black
Yellow

Din connection
Grey
Grey with red stripe

Din connection
Grey
Grey with blue stripe

Blue
and a big ol' 9 pin black plug which completely baffles me.

While the first four are fairly obvious (but only cos they match up with the new wiring!), the speaker wires aren't so obvious. Does the fact that there are only four suggest that they only connect to two speakers?

Any help appreciated. Checked the 944 stereo FAQ and found the crutchfield website but am just too impatient to get any sort of adaptor posted!

Realise that my last post may be a bit of a big ask, so I have included a picture of the back of the original headunit harness with the wires I wish to identify to see if that helps in any way!

Again, any suggestions welcome!

LHS of picture:

Black = Earth
Red = +12v
Yello = Ignition Live

(Note - Red and Yellow may be the other way 'round. Test and see. Or just wire both to +12v to make the stereo come on all the time, rather than only when the ignition is on.)

Middle of picture:

Two black and grey DIN plugs - probably speakers, front left and front right.

Right Hand Side of picture:

Blue = Live when the radio is on (so, electric ariel or external amplifier or similar).
Co-Ax Black = ariel
Big Black Blob = CD Changer, perhaps?

Not sure if I am right on any of these ...

Dipped into the behinds of my stereo for the first time today and I can confirm what Oli has said. The 3 main wires are the live, switched live and neg.

Shaun,

What are you doing with the Panasonic F35 you are taking out? I also have a '90 S2 with the same original head unit but it is playing up. I would like to keep my car original so if you are prepared to part with it and it's still in full working order, I would be interested in buying it off you.

Thanks

- Still have the old headunit, but pretty sure it doesn't work. It looked like it was getting power but I couldn't get it to turn on. Which is why I bought the aftermarket stereo...

Would happily send it to you if you are prepared to take a gamble. Although, it looks like you are quite local anyway. Let me know.
