S2 Tappets

Quick question.

My s2 has always been a wee bit tappety at idle. It goes away as soon as you apply any throttle. Today i was removing the head as part of a general fixing session ( I've got a pulled exhaust stud that makes a chuffing sound so i'm going to tap it and fit a new stud) anyway i noticed that all the tappets on the inlet side are squashy and all the ones on the exhaust side are not squashy. Should replace all the non squashy ones and if so has anyone used the vw ones as porsche want £40 odd quid each for them and there are 8 on the inlet side.That is of course assuming that they are not supposed to be squashy which i think they aren't
 
They should all be squashy. The ones on the exhaust side have most likely got stiff due to the higher temps on that side of the head. You should be able to revive them by soaking in (insert solvent of your choice here) to break down the gumminess and get them mobile again.
 
It should do. They are obviously pumping up if the noise goes away with throttle (Oil pressure). That would indicate to me they are not coconutted but just a bit gummed up and sticky.

So if you get them nice and clean then even idle oil pressure and flow should be sufficient to pump them up and they won't be noisy at idle other than the first few seconds when they will have drained down from standing. "They all do that Sir"!
 
As M3 said .... but the original Q about the use of VW tappets in place of the Porsche ones is a good one. I understand that there are some MUCH cheaper Audi ones that are a direct replacement which were used on the common Audi models of the same era (80, 90, 100 etc). I think I have the part numbers at home if anyone wants them, or there may be a note in the Alternative Parts Fitment thread.

I've managed to get them all nice and squashy again. I used the bang it on a bit of soft wood method to get the pistons out of the tappers. I then soaked them in brake cleaner and worked the pistons till the were smooth. I decided to do them all one at a time. It only took a couple of hours to do. So if it works then that'll be a saving of 16 x £40. Not bad for a couple of hours work.

Sounds promising. Fingers crossed for silence!
 
I haven't got the engine back together yet. I'll hopefully get it up and running this weekend.
 
Update!
Got the car back together and took it to a show over the weekend. Runs much better than before much perkier and no tappet noise. The only downside is that i can now hear a ticking noise coming from somewhere around the fuel rail/injectors area. I've tried unplugging the injectors to see if it was a noisy injector but no change. is it possible for the idle control valve to tick? It sounds kind of like the noise you would get if it had an electrical arc some where if you know what I mean. any ideas ?

 
The ticking noise is the injectors, sounds like a sewing machine when the revs are a bit higher - perfectly normal sir.
 
The injectors can be really quite noisy on an S2 - from your description it sounds like they are the cause.
