S2 timing chain

Hi all,

I've just bought an S2 coupe with 93K miles, and although the timing and balance belts have been changed (and retensioned) recently at Northway Porsche, as far as I can tell the cam chain and cam chain tensioner are original. I've heard that they need changing before 100K miles or so, but what exactly needs changing? The chain and full tensioner assembly, or only certain parts? How much will it cost me? Does the chain need to be retensioned like the belt?

Also, Northway inspected the car for me and said that there is a whine coming from the gearbox (or do I mean transaxle?), and that they think it needs replacing. What's the worst that can happen if I leave it until something actually breaks? Certainly, I don't have any major problems changing between any gears. If I should change it ASAP, can anyone suggest a good place to get a refurbished box that is going to last for a long time?

Thanks,

Tom

You need to get the chain and tensioner as well as the cam sprockets inspected by someone who knows what they are doing.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]If you're lucky then a new chain and tensioner will be enough - about £250 plus fitting I think (but I've never done it on its own). If you're unlucky you'll need cams as well and wave bye bye to the fat end of £2k.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]944 gearboxes get noisy and last fine in that condition for thousands and thousands of miles, but that's assuming it's the normal noise. Ray knows what he's talking about so it might be something unusual. It's only about £300 to fix the normal noise I think.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Ray is well trusted and respected so I would go with his advice. Once he takes the cam cover off and can see/inspect the chain, tensioner and sprockets then you'll know whats needed. Hopefully it will just need a new chain, and the upper plastic slipper that clips on to the tensioner. This should be under £300 inc parts and fitting.

Next level will be the tensioner itself and lower plastic slipper (add £300 to the above cost)

Finally, you 'could' have some damaged sprockets on the cam, which poor Fen always seems to be unlucky with and this will add another £1400

I had mine inspected at 90k and needed chain and slipper, and then again at 150k, so I have been lucky so far. I will now be changing mine every 50k miles - it does not need retensioning like the belts

Thanks all.

Northway is unfortunately not local to me, it was just the specialist the previous owner (whom I bought the car off) used. I'm probably going to use Barr-tech in Cambridge, and they are not a Porsche specific specialist, though Porsche and Ferrari are the main marques they deal with I think (and I saw at least one 944 there last time I passed it).

Sounds like the best option is to get Barr-Tech to inspect the cam chain and the gearbox and go from there. Fingers crossed about the cam sprockets!
