S2 wheels ok on late Turbo?

All,

Just musing on speccing up some wet-weather tyres for the autumn and winter. Probably Uniroyal Rainsport 2, using S2 sizes on S2 wheels.

I think I am right in thinking that I can use a set of D90s off a 944S2 on a 1990 250hp Turbo, with no fit problems? Both fronts and rears are slightly narrower than the Turbo D90s but that's no bad thing when cutting down through standing water. And S2 wheels are a lot more readily available, in fact I have access to a set.

I believe the 1990 Turbo and the S2 have the same brakes? That's the only thing I can think of that could screw up the plan, if for any reason the brakes foul the S2 wheels but are OK on the Turbo wheels.

That will also give me the possibility of putting some very dry-weather-focused rubber on the wider Turbo wheels, with a possible view to doing a few track days.

The 6 and 8 inch D 90s will fit straight on to your Turbo, only difference if you have M030 front brakes, you will need a 5mm spacer or the 6s catch the writing on the caliper.

Quick work from Alasdair ! I was going to point out that the later Turbo's have the Big calipers and discs from the 928 S4 and that you'll probaby need some spacers !

You can actually get a pair of the Tele-dial early style turbo 16" rims to fit over the larger calipers with a very small amount of machining - had this done to a pair of front wheels on my Turbo S

S2s had 7" fronts: 6" fronts were from 964s. The sevens are perfectly adequate but the six inch rims on the front of a 250PS Turbo are far from safe.

I don't have M030 brakes, just the regular late Turbo brakes, and for clarity I am talking about S2 wheels, i.e. 7J and 8J versus the 7.5J and 9J Turbo wheels. So can I get away without spacers on hte fronts? I believe my brakes are the same as S2 ones, but that's really the question...

OK, now I am *really* confused.

Over on Rennlist I find the following comment: "The rare S2s featuring M030 have the same "Design 90" wheels (7.5"x16" ET65 front, 9"x16" ET52.3 rear) as the '90 & '91 944 turbo models."

Which implies that a standard 1990 944S2 may not have the same brakes as a standard 1990 Turbo. Mine doesn't have M030 suspension but does the mere fact that it is a standard 1990 Turbo mean it has M030 brakes, and, if so, does *that* mean that the 7J S2 fronts won't go over the brakes, in the same way that the 6J 964 wheels won't, as Alastair commented earlier?
