S2's and Catalytic Converter?

I have an early 944 S2 (April '89) and it doesn't have a cat as far as I can tell. Should it? I have seen some information that suggests all S2's have cats and some which suggests they came in in 1990.

If they were introduced in 1990 what was done to ensure that the output remained the same as a non-cat S2?

It was a no-cost delete option right to the end of production I believe, so it may well never have had one.
 
And if it was like the turbo item it was a high flow sports type to minimise the restriction. The addition of the lambda sensor to the exhaust may have had an effect on the mapping (in closed loop) and they may have made minor alterations to ensure the cat car produced the same figures as the non cat car.

Contact your local OPC (or Exeter on 01392 822800) with the chassis number and they will be able to tell you the options the car left the factory with. I believe cat delete was an option for the full production run. I'm almost certain it was for the Turbo (except the cabs registered on K-plates).
 
In France cat converters were not compulsory before 1993. I doubt the UK legislation to be anymore stringent.

As I posted in the Spanish MoT thread we were the same. From 1st August 1993 any new car in the UK had to be able to meet emissions regulations that are nigh-on impossible to meet without a cat, making them effectively compulsory, though if you can meet the standard without one on a car first registered after that date you're OK to run without one. Car registered before that date have much less stringent emissions figures to meet so they can have their cat legally removed even if they had one originally.
 
Maybe a stupid question, but if cat's were standard, does that necessarily mean O2 sensors were also standard? I thought the two went hand in hand, but mine doesn't have cat delete in the options list but also appears to have no O2 sensor.

I guess maybe a previous owner has done a cat delete though.
 
You won't have an O2 sensor if you don't have a Cat.

As far as I am aware, Cat delete is not one of the options that is listed on the options sticker. I can find no mention of it in any of the online lists and my own Turbo (that has a cat delete from new) has no extra code. The OPC will be able to confirm from the build documentation.

 
The absence of cat seems to be related to equipment coded 150 which is refered to as "operates with leaded fuel" - a less politically incorrect way to say "cat delete" in a quite environmental-concerned Germany, already in the mid eigthies.

M150 includes a specific plug in the DME harness and cars featuring the uncoded "no cat" equipment from new may very well have this plug.
 
Any car with a cat will have a O2 sensor, otherwise it would destory the cat very quickly.

Cars without cats from new would almost certainly have no O2 sensor. There is (so I'm told) a jumper in the ECU you can set (or maybe it's an additional plug as Thom describes) to set it to run without the lambda sensor. I had a discussion with the guy who sold Blitz chips about converting my S2 cab this way if I removed the cat, but I never quite got round to fitting a cat bypass pipe to it.
